How much of a deposit, as a percentage of the overall quote price, do tradesmen normally require before starting work on a building?

    Depends on the job.
    Small domestic.
    Large building site.

    What are you getting done?

Small job like a boiler or heat pump they might want half up front. House extension will be much less but you could pay weekly payments on top of the deposit. For an extention it's important to make sure that you owe enough at the end of the job to get him to rectify any mistakes or snag list

The other ? is how much of a credit risk are you willing to take by paying someone who may do a runner.

So how you pay the upfront deposit and what paperwork you require is important to consider

I know there is another side to this equation but let's ask the question anyway.
I have been on the wrong side of this equation: did salaried work for a company, never got paid, left, sued in court, got judgment, he still has not paid: 10 years on. Every time the sheriff goes out its 75 euro and he agrees to pay 25 euro a month.

“I can’t pay my staff or mortgage with instagram likes”.
