Modern Foreign Languages Teaching

    Hi
I have a friend who is hoping to relocate to Ireland from the UK. She is a qualified French and Spanish teacher (teaching both subjects in the UK since 2012). In relation to timetabling; she will only be able to teach one year group at a time as in the vast majority of schools all foreign languages are timetabled at the same time e.g. French/German/Spanish would all fall into the same block on a timetable; therefore she wouldn't be able to teach both languages to the same year group. I'm sure this would leave her short on her timetable. Would she be able to teach English to Junior Cert or some other subjects?
How do French/German or French/Spanish teachers normally fill up their timetables if they are only in a position to teach one of the languages to a year group at any one time?

In our school they might have 2 first year groups which would be on at different times, and sphe, tutorial etc to make up a few hours.

For senior cycle we would have languages on option lines, so they could appear on different lines as not all students do them.

That's a good subject combination to have. I know a couple of recently graduated teachers with French and Spanish and they've had their pick of jobs here in Dublin. All sorts of things can be done with timetables. Some years we've had 2 classes of Spanish in a year group on at different times so one teacher has both classes. I doubt your friend will have much trouble getting full hours. Look on educationposts.ie and you'll see then job vacancies.

In our school 1st years and TY don't have language classes at the same time, so she could have two of them. I have two TY groups this year. She certainly won't be teaching anything like English unless the school is very badly stuck.
