Baby Killed in Police Shootout in US

A group gathered Sunday by Interstate 10, near the site of the shooting, to pay tribute to the life of infant La’Mello Parker and two people who were killed earlier May 3. Authorities said Christin Parker, 32, and her nephew Brandon Parker, 26, were killed by La'Mello's father, Eric Derrell Smith, in a domestic dispute, leading to the police chase and standoff in which Smith and the baby were killed.

“We want to have a coherent, truthful conversation about what happened and how this could have been avoided. Period,” Anastassia Doctor, a Black Lives Matter Mississippi board member and Army veteran, told The Associated Press Monday. “If this was a white man with a white child, would they have done the same thing?”

Reginald Virgil, who was at the vigil Sunday, questioned why officers from multiple departments couldn't de-escalate the situation without using deadly force.

“Knowing that there was an infant in the vehicle, where were their hearts?" he told the AP. "Where is the empathy? Where is the concern for the Black lives that were in that vehicle? A total disregard for Black lives.”

We need to get as much information as possible released. Why were the cops chasing them, when they knew a child was in the car? There are four other children left without a mother. Their reaction seems punitive and deadly. What's telling is how many of these killings are in the South.

This kind of stuff isn't even news anymore.

Dying in shoot outs and being killed by cops is culture at this stage.

Firstly presumably the reason police were chasing him is in your first paragraph - They claim he killed 2 men.

The following is from further down the article, there's a possibility this guy shot his own child or the child got caught in the crossfire of a gunfight with the police.

An autopsy determined that La’Mello Parker died of a single gunshot wound. The coroner of Harrison County, Mississippi — Brian Switzer — told The Associated Press last week that Biloxi police investigators would examine the bullet to try to determine the source of the fatal shot.

Switzer said a pathologist will determine whether the fatal shot came from close range or a distance.

Problem here isn't the police it's gun control.

Unfortunately until America has gun control as the poster mentioned above this type of thing is going to happen..Sandy hook, Columbine, cinema shooting, multiple cop shootings of black and white people.

The majority of states seemingly don't want to give up gun ownership and you can walk into places and buy lethal weapons on top of the lack of responsibility/maturity to own a gun it's a horrid situation....

Problem here isn't the police it's gun control.

It's both, but at least police culture is addressable in the forseable future. We're already seeing reform laws taking effect and securing indictments against police. The story of that cop the other week being indicted because he used lethal force but either was the escalator of lethal force or failed to practice some pretty obvious de-escalation particular to that killing.

Gun control meanwhile is not easy to fix least of all when you have a side of that argument immune to common sense or an IQ in civics.

There's another neighboring PD investigating the incident but given conflicts of interest in intercooperation between departments, I'd be happier knowing this case was investigated by an independent body.

So? Tearing up because one person shot was miniature size? What’s the point of this thread?

What is the point of bumping threads you don't want to see? Very counterproductive to that agenda.

Genuinely don't get the obsession with America and the goings on there. Mississippi is over 6000km away. Go that far roughly Eastardly and you end up in Pakistan.

So far this year in the US More Than One Mass Shooting Per Day Has Occurred In 2021

It's literally an everyday event and that's with lockdown. Only news worthy if there's a new high score or a new horror like a baby. Or cops. Or cops and a baby. Until they restrict weapons it's going to keep happening.

Russia has already announced it's going to have tighter gun restrictions after today's event.

It is when whitey kills a black person. It isn't even news when blacks kill blacks. Not even news to the BLM movement.

Oh how will they spin that on Fox... hundreds of events and the US is filibustered from doing anything, one event in Russia and off they pop.

I'm guessing "because they hate freedom etc" but when some guest pivots to the homophobia laws oop cut to commercial.

The minimum range of an ICBM is 5,500 km. :)

It's important because we have to know if the correct procedure was followed. If La'mello was killed by a stray bullet from a police gun, it becomes a very serious matters. A South African minister called the U.S. 'A slaughterhouse for black people.' It is damaging the image of the U.S. across the world. The President needs to step up on this issue.

And why should the majority of humanity care about that when a) they aren't American and b) don't live there?

It's questionable if it even is damaging the reputation of America. I doubt it's being reported really anywhere outside the states. I only know about it because you posted this thread. Secondly, mass shootings are part and parcel of American society and have been now for the best part of 20 years.

That's just the kind of close range threat that we need IRBM's for!

Does not put off millions of people from wanting to entry the US legally or otherwise.

It's important because America is seen as the leader of the free world. A lot of our ideas of how society treats people originates from there: The LGBT rights movement, civil rights in Northern Ireland. To see their police act in such a brutal manner against African American citizens is an indictment of American society. It damages the sense of moral superiority of Western countries. It's worrying because it's a slippery slope. Are our cops going to start treating minorities like Travellers and African Irish in the same fashion? We need to be mindful.

    Another take
A heartless father accused of abducting his infant son used the boy as a human shield during a shootout with Mississippi police, according to a report.

Eric Derell Smith, 30, allegedly kidnapped 4-month-old La’Mello Parker on Monday after police say he fatally shot his ex-girlfriend, Christin Parker, 32, and her 26-year-old nephew, Brandon Parker, near Baker, Louisiana, WALA reported.

No quote for context or anything.

A law enforcement source. Not just some Joe Soap off the street.

As more information comes out I'm sure it'll be clear what happened.
Possibly there is bodycam footage which should show the event. It's in the police interest to get that out asap.

This argument makes no sense. Why is a foreign minister’s opinion factored in when he had no real relationship to the “victims”? Clutching at straws man...

There isn't enough crime or racism in this country so we must have threads about it in other countries.

The enlightenment, which is broadly what modern western societies are based on, started in Europe. The Americans borrowed it from us.

As for the last part. No, they aren't.
