Improving concrete slab patio

We've just completed an extension to the house. Outside the patio doors we have a concrete slab patio running the width of the house and going about 2 metres out.

These are the regular grey concrete slabs, about 60cm x 60cm.

I'm looking to improve these and make them less dull, however general advice I'm seeing here and elsewhere is not to paint them.

One issue that we're having is that the slabs seem to absorb or hold rainwater for quite a while and also dry at different rates. For example, it hasn't rained since yesterday and the ground is quite dry, however while some of the concrete slabs have dried, others still look wet. Also, we have a barbecue on the patio and drips of fat etc. aren't easy to clean.

    Anything I can do?
Would priming (and not painting) be of any use?
Is painting it a ridiculous idea?

one option will be to pressure clean them now and then seal them with a water proofing sealer for concrete.

This should stop the issues you have with water retention and make general cleaning easier.
