    A failed gasket isn't really terminal for a loco, it's very fixable.

    There seems back and fourth on 142.
    One Facebook says 142 cylinder damaged because of incorrect starting. Alas. Good that it's be repaired

    The engine in 142 is far from rare and brand new liner gaskets are available from a wide range of suppliers. Large engines like the EMD 645 in 142 use cylinder heads for each cylinder in the engine with the liner gaskets doing the job of a head gasket in a car or truck. They can be replaced with the engine in situ by removing one of the cylinder heads. If the cylinder head or liner is warped leading to a leak, machining or even replacement of the cylinder head and liner is possible, with spare parts being available from a wide range of manufacturers.

    The failure was likely caused by volunteers forgetting to bar the engine over with the cylinder cocks open to clear any water. Trying to compress water generally ends badly, in which case it's lucky that the gasket failed before the connecting rod bent, which could've led to the engine tearing itself apart.
