    Hi All

What is it like to do a service on the above auto box . The car is a 2009 Volvo V50.

Is it something that will have to go to a main dealer /specialist or is it generally a job an independent mechanic would take on .

I don’t know much about this type of gearbox -are they generally reliable

    Thanks
    Barr

    don't touch it.

My experiecnce with auto boxes like this is when you go at them, even something as simple as an oil and filter change, then tend to act up after.

I'm not doubting you , just when I checked online , it says they have to be done every 60k km .

Would it not be a safer bet to do a service in case I run into trouble in the future.

Yes, absolutely get it serviced - don't listen to them* Barr. There's nothing magical about an automatic gearbox that makes them troublesome to service, anyone who does such will have the diagnostic equipment to do so properly.

My understanding is just the oil and filter needs to be changed . It is working perfectly at the moment but I have no idea when or if it was done before.

Some mechanics don’t want to go near an auto boxes from previous experience.

Oil quality degrades over time. Eventually components will start to wear out - it happens to all autos, some have shorter/longer servicing durations. I'd absolutely get it done for piece of mind. Volvo powershift was the same as Ford, so if you can find a good Ford indy they should be able to do it.

That's a Ford gearbox so get a price off a Ford dealer as well as a Volvo dealer. Those gearboxes are very tempermental and don't have a great reputation for reliability so unless you know a mechanic or specialist who is familiar with working on them I'd tend to get the gearbox serviced by Volvo or Ford. Just my 2c though.

OK just off the phone with a Ford Main dealer - they don't want to go near it , they said go to Volvo

    Quote from Volvo €340 .

Their advise is oil and filer every 60k or every 3 years . It gives bother if not serviced .

Seems the oil is expensive and its a time comsuming job .

Worth every penny I'd get it done.

Might be better off getting a spare box at this stage so that when you get bother you have a spare box on hand.

Service or not, that box is going to go. They are notorious and people get stuck with them.

That's a very grim prognosis

Do you have experience with this box , surely they all can’t be doomed to fail .

I'd say any indy mechanic I approach will have this level of enthusiasm for this job :pac:

Probably a more realistic portrayal of the interaction.....

That actually is very straightforward, I figured it'd at least need diagnostics hooked up as is the case for my mid 00s automatic.

So the consensus looks to be plough on and get it serviced . At least with a main dealer I should have a comeback if it goes tits up .

As an aside , the last auto I owned (many moons ago ) - had the same issue .

That car was a Freelander . When I looked them up , they too had a serviceable auto box.

However , I found an Indy who specialised in Landover at the time. He told me not to go near it, as this is when the trouble could start . He did convert it to 2WD . Took his advise , ran it for a few years , never any issues.

I’ve had multiple failures with this particular gearbox. Do not go near it

Did you have the failures after getting it serviced ?

There's nothing to go wrong with the service (bar using the wrong oil or not filling/draining to capacity).

With my auto, you need to use diagnostic software to run in the new oil and you need to replace the entire drainpan+seals - yours is much more idiotproof!
