Huawei Y6p - No Google Android Help?!

I am an apple user and have only limited experience with Android but still know the basics and how to do stuff. Recently I ordered a Huawei Y6p from Amazon.co.uk as a birthday gift for my elderly mother, she is just starting to learn how to use a smart phone and is recovering from illness, she wanted a smart phone on specific instructions not to spend too much money. Alot of people I know are raving about the Huawei phones so I bought the Y6p and today when setting it up I discovered that it is most awfully restricted and I could not even install Google Home as I bought an accompanying Chromecast to smarten up her 10 year old non-smart LCD TV.

The phone is running Android but I can't install google apps or even access the PlayStore, I found it to be a godawful pig of a yoke which will only serve to frustrate my poor mum when the sleek slippery speed and simplicity of an iPhone would serve her better as she enters her 70th year.

I am thinking to return it but she loves it as her gift and I have unwittingly purchased her the totally wrong item when listening to the masses.

Can it be rooted or made like an normal android phone?

Don't know where you got advice from, but it is well known that Huawei phones are banned from google.

The description even says so on amazon.
    About this item

HUAWEI Y6p comes with the new HUAWEI AppGallery and is not compatible with Google Play Store and Services. Find more about HUAWEI AppGallery on the Huawei Community.

There is tricks and methods to try and put google play on it. But looking at them the phone is to slow and sluggish for them to operate properly.

I would return the phone if your still in online change of mind window. But with brexit EU rules may no longer apply?

If your keeping it, you could try and unlock bootloader and install custom rom?
    https://www.mobilewithdrivers.com/unlock-bootloader/huawei-y6p-64gb-4gb-ram
    https://forum.xda-developers.com/f/huawei-y6-roms-kernels-recoveries-other-devel.6520/

That would void the warranty and risk bricking the device. Some brief reading is that you would need to downgrade the firmware to flash custom roms.

This. Plenty of options that are great out the box. Moto G8 play for example.

I have contacted Amazon for a return and no problem, I am so glad I ordered it from Amazon and not the Carphone Warehouse as was my first thought initially.

I played around with the phone today and I can't even download netflix either, my whole reason for the smart phone was whats app calls, netflix and chromecast for my mum. I saw about the Huawei store at the time of ordering and it actually encouraged me as I don't like Google or big -tech and figured I would just install the .apk install files after, but you can't install any Google Apps via the .apk method.

Once again Amazon proves it's weight in gold to me.
