Happy Mayo day! They well be cursed to never win an all Ireland but it is one of our finest counties anyway.
But I think they missed a trick by not combining it with cinco de mayo, the 5th of May.

    🙈🙉🙊

It was really taking off before Covid,2019 was massive and tied in with the 8000 Mayo fans who flew to New York for the game v NY.
All online this year but massive money gone into it and hopefully will be going forward.
Started off as a bit of a joke a few years ago but I love it and so do most in Mayo.

    Ah stop,
Its fairly harmless while at the same time raising the profile of the county for tourism etc.
Just watched the show on TG4 and it was great.

Not for me. Certainly Mayo along with Donegal are forgotten counties and people, but it's too cringe for me. The profile of the county is fairly high as is with Westport a premier tourist destination.

I think it's supposed to be Mexican mayonnaise, if you're doing it right.

And what harm does it do raising the profile of the county even further? Maybe you'd like Ireland to tone down the St Patricks Day stuff worldwide as well?

Was there myself that day, just the sheer relief and then the elation at winning a final in Croke Park and winning it comfortably and against Kerry, a wonderful day

It opens up the county to ridicule that's why. I'm all for the county capitalizing on tourism potential but there are better classier ways to do it IMO.

I'd love if St. Patrick's day or "Pattys Day" rather, was toned down TBH, it's gaudy and paddy wackery at it's finest. Just like Mayo Day.

The newer generations of Irish people really don't need Irish Americans or anyone else for that matter giving them a pat on the head and telling them how great they are etc. This isn't the 80s.

Fair enough, at least you are consistent. Though from looking at social media today it seems the biggest buy in to Mayo Day is coming from young emigrants and their families, i think that can only be a positive thing. And tbh i dont see anything kitschy about the whole concept, i was a bit meh and feared it might become a bit paddywhackery when it started but thats

If it gives those young immigrants something to hold onto (been there) and they feel a connection to Mayo, through something like Mayo Day, then fair enough; it serves its purpose in that respect. I still feel, personally, it's corny in its general concept.

Yes please, end it altogether would be even better.

Except for the day off. We still want the day off.

At worst, people are ambivalent. I can't get my head around people thinking they would be ridiculed for a tourism promo.

It's a bit like people saying they are "embarrassed" to be Irish, whenever something is fcuked up, or that we are a"laughing stock". Really, nobody cares that much.

I can't believe people are still celebrating Napoleon's death.

I’m as cynical and skeptical as the rest, but in fairness some of the videos they’ve produced in conjunction with Mayo Day are just phenomenal

As a county with probably one of the biggest global diasporas why not take a day to celebrate once a year and raise the profile of the county
