    I cant get a straight answer from this one

    If a crab and a half weigh a pound and a half, but the half crab weighs half as much again as the whole crab, what do half the whole crab and the whole of the half crab weigh?

    What colour was the crab?

    Are the crabs the same size? Or rather, was the half crab the same size of the whole crab when it was whole itself?

    Did the half crab sing "You can make me whole again"?

    Riddle me this, why do I sound like The Riddler?

    Do the whole crab and the half crab care?

    Do I even care at this stage?

    Answers on a postcard please.

    Only thing that will solve this mystery is if you tell me whether you prefer a Custard Slice or a Coffee Slice

    x = the weight of the whole crab
    y = the weight of the half crab (note, the trick question is that the 2 crabs don't necessarily weigh the same)

    a crab and a half weigh a pound and a half => x + y = 3/2
    the half crab weighs half as much again as the whole crab => y = 3x/2

    => x + 3x/2 = 3/2
    => 2x + 3x = 3
    =>5x = 3
    => x = 3/5

    Therefore:
    y = 3x/2
    2y = 3x
    2y = 3 (3/5)
    2y = 9/5
    y = 9/10

    Finally, the question is "what do half the whole crab and the whole of the half crab weigh"

    y + x/2 = ?

    => 9/10 + (3/5)/2 = ?
    => 9/10 + 3/10 = ?
    ANSWER = 12/10 lbs (or 1.2 lbs)

    OR (the shorter way - don't necessarily need to solve for y as long as you have x):

    y + x/2 =?
    =? 3x/2 + x/2 =?
    => 3(3/5)/2 + (3/5)/2 = ?
    Answer = 12/10 lbs (or 1.2 lbs)

    It was said already 2.1lbs.

    The crab is .6lb the half crab is .9lb

    Half .6 and double .9 = 2.1.

    Ahh, but it's down to the interpretation of "whole of the half crab". You are interpreting that as to mean 2 half crabs (i.e. the whole of the crab that was previously halved). In terms of maths, "the whole" just means 1. So the whole of a half crab is 1(half-crab).

    Think of it another way...

    If someone was to order a half-pint of Guinness in a pub, drink it and then declare "I just drank the whole half-pint", would they be saying they drank a "half-pint" or a "pint" (2 half-pints)?

    You might joke, but a signature dish of The Tannery in Dungarvan is.....Crab Brulée - which is, basically, crab and custard. ;)
