Refund of car tax

I just purchased motor tax online last week.

It does not kick in until May 1st

Unfortunately I have just purchased a new car today and as of today no longer have use of the car I just purchased the motor tax for.

Just wondering if it's possible to get a refund of the motor tax in these circumstances seeing as it hasn't been used yet / and or is there a 14 day cooling off period when it was purchased online?

Just a bit of a kicker having spent a considerable amount on tax for the next 12 months only a week ago and due to unforeseen circumstances had to buy a new car today.

Any chance of a refund in this case?

Have tried ringing Shannon and the local motor tax office but there's no-one Manning the phones due to Level 5 ATM.

Are you going to be scrapping the other car ?

It's an interesting one, with distance selling you are allowed 14 days cancellation for products and services, in theory that should apply here. Let us know how you get on.

You should be good to go with this if you get the application in before the weekend - as the car won't have been used by you in a public place since the disc was issued.

As poster above said once it's received in your local Motor Tax office before the weekend you should be fine. If your Local office has a post box and you're close I'd try and hand deliver it tomorrow if possible too

Form does not need to be Garda signed or stamped due to Covid too

    Thanks all.

No, the old car won't be scrapped.

I'll fill out the form and pop the tax disc into the CoCo this evening so they have it before tomorrow.

Be interesting to see what happens and I'll let you know how I get on.

Does distance selling apply to tax though? It is technically not a product you are buying but a tax you are paying.
I'd be interested to know too. :)
