undercoat and overcoat

I was painting a piece of box iron today that was clean bare metal. It got me thinking though what is the correct way to paint bare metal.

I gave it two coats of undercoat (182 zinc primer in a spray can) and 2 coats of massey red paint (again out of a spray can).

I was giving roughly 10 mins in between each coat for it to become tacky.

But what is the correct way if doing it properly? Should undercoat be left to dry fully before getting overcoat?

Picked up a rattle can of that zinc primer recently.
Jez stuff is gone awful expensive with damn all coverage in a tin. 1.8sq m in a tin and you need 3 coats, so a tin does half sq meter. Add the top coat and it’s madness.

Have to be honest I think I might go for some of the direct to metal rust proof paints instead of primer and top coat.

The red oxide primer is great stuff, used liberally around these parts for rust protection!

We painted a bare box section frame, bit rusty metal, metal paint from Aldi maybe 8 years ago and there’s hardly any rust showing.
No undercoat, one good cover of top coat.

No idea of the brand but it was great stuff.
