Does this sound like timing chain?

    Hi guys,

Don't know a lot about cars so bare with me. I bought a 2011 VW golf 1.2 tsi a few weeks ago. I noticed a rattling noise coming from the engine (this could have been there since I bought it ). To someone who doesn't know a lot about cars, this doesn't sound like a healthy noise..

A friend told me today it sounds like the timing chain.. (he also doesn't know a lot about cars!). Can anyone tell me if this engine noise sounds normal or if it sounds like a timing chain needing to be replaced etc.?

    Cheers

    That definitely doesn’t sound normal.

Thanks for the reply Colm. Do you think it sounds like the timing chain?

Whatever it is needs fixing. Just bring it to a mechanic. They’ll tell you what’s wrong.

Could be timing chain. I know the early 1.2 tsi engines had issues with the tensioner failing. I have the same engine in my 2012 Octavia but I believe they replaced the tensioner from 2012 onward before moving from chains to belts

Timing chain rattle is more noticable when starting engine from cold and it rattles. I did notice a wobble on plug lead and wonder if plug is loose or lead not pushed down.?
You have dipped engine for oil have you.

Think something is worn out under cam box and giving you that sound and might be a common thing in tsi engines.

I’ve had 1.2 tsi’s that sound way worse than that tbh.

Is it due an oil change?

This is the 4 cylinder though, fair enough the 3 cylinder can sound like a bag of spanners but I haven’t heard a TSI sound like that.

I think i did and chatted to vw and mentioned possibly the mechanical high pressure pump on the rocker box.

2016 1.2 TSI noisy high pressure fuel pump

Plenty of pumps and cams for sale for that engine.

The 2016 1.2tsi is a totally different generation of engine to the one in this video though.

That does sound like a bag of hammers but those engines are so crap could be one of a multitude of things. Have you got a check engine light on?

Yes agreed bag of crap and not built to last.
Timing chains going at 40th and screwing up an engine not good.
Cant remember year or how many cylinders it had but the noise sounded the same.

Every 1.2 I buy sounds completely different, no two are the same. I do always think the timing chain is fecked on all of them

Doesnt sound too abnormal too me, could it be high pressure fuel pump cam follower worn?

Sounds like the chain. Change the oil see if it lessens / disappears.

i've a 1.2TSi (2012 reg) and i do get a short rattle (1-2s) sometimes on startup, but i was told that this bay just be brief oil starvation - the oil used is quite thin; but was also told there's no official timing chain service interval on them anymore because of issues with premature wear on some.

Heard of one break at 40k and full itemized service history and went to court and vw had to supply a new engine.
Bad news it went at 80K
