Is my immersion on or off?

I put my immersion on for a bath and I can’t remember if I turned it off or not. I’m pretty sure I did but the on/off writing is faded and ahhhhhh.
The switches are up now. I think that’s right, and it should be off.
Up or down? What do you reckon?

This thread has got me thinking if I turned it off this morning.

    Mission accomplished!

Assuming this is a serious question, as I've had the same issue myself. If you switch off most of your appliances in the house and then look at your electric meter, you should see a big difference in the speed of the change of the reading (or wheel spinning if you have an old meter), as you switch the immersion on/off - off is when it's going slow.

However, if the water is hot, you may get a false off as in the switch is in the on position, but it's not drawing current because the water is at a high temp.

Does it cost much to keep this on all the time? I always wondered if it actually has a massive impact on the monthly bill.

Yes, it would. Anything that involves heating stuff would.

Get a large pliers, tap it gently off the cyclinder once or twice. Then cut through the flex coming from the switch to the off the cylinder.
The resounding flash will blind you momentarily and the bang will deafen you temporarily.
Thats how dangerous 'lectricity is , what was the question again ?

    helpless laughing! wonderful...

I refuse to use the electric immersion EVER. If the stove is lit it heats water ( back boiler) Else I boil a kettle on the gas.

As a small child I once wondered what was inside a lamp socket ( with no bulb but switched on) so in went a finger... Since then I have deeply respected what electricity feels like.

I may have worked as an electrician for a long time.

You may have been shot by Eddie Izzard's phaser while it was set to "did I leave the immersion on?"

With my immersion, 'On' is left, 'Off' is right.

The switch on mine shows red on the top when it is on. I check it obsessively..

Actually I just thought; I could switch that fuse off permanently in the fuse box?

Off now, might be on later.
