    Hi folks,
    Looking for some opinions.
    Have a 2010 Honda Civic 2.2 cdti.
Back wheel collapsed inwards last weekend so took it to my mechanic who discovered the axle is rotten to the point it’s bent.
Anyone ever hear of this happening?
    Mechanic hasn’t ever seen it.
Any ball park fiqure on a cost to fix as I can’t seem to come across one so far.
I really don’t want to ring Honda as I’d imagine it’s beyond what the car is worth.

The axle from Honda is poisonous expensive. You can get pattern parts apparently but I’d swap for a known good used one.

    Got a price from a scrapyard for 350 off a 2009 civic.
What would we be talking then to fit to mine?
    Days labour?

Rotten is it a UK import and what else is rotten.

No it’s an Irish car from new. Rest of the car underneath is solid.

Bit surprised been an irish car and rotten as Hondas are usually built to last.

I think those were made in the UK factory.

They were, but they hardly salted the production line

I suspect we use as much salt as the UK does now. Before the 09/10 winter cold snap we generally just used grit or grit with molasses as an adhesive/minor melting factor but we're well on to salt now.

Just thought I would update this,
I found a good second hand axle in a local scrap yard. The car is back on the road again.

Going rate seems to be 300-350 pricing around for the part delivered.

How did you do on labour?

Don't agree, Have worked on quite a few cars from 08 onwards and never see a similar level of corrosion as UK imports

Labour was €180 including injecting the second hand axle with oil,and replacing a corroded rear brake line. I’ve noticed the car also rides higher now since the axle change. I suspect the old axle was on the way out for a while as it has looked “lowered”. I just put it down to all the crap in the boot!

How can a car ride higher as thinking the bolts through the bushings were tightened with a hanging suspension down and not level.

Coil springs hold a car at a height and if replaced with shorter or longer ones will give a different height.

Was the replacement axle identical to previous one?

    Hi @robm360!

I just googled collapsed rear axel on car as my rear wheel collapsed inward at the weekend and the mechanic on first look says the back axek has collapsed. He said this is the first time in 25 years he has seen this.

My car funnily enough is a 2009 Civic imported from the UK.

Before my mechanic comes back to me with a plan and costs, I thought I would ask how your Civic has been since you got the replacement back axel?

I hope this was the end of your issue and the car is still driving well for you?

Thanks so much for any thoughts/tips
