Plaster Repair

The paint was peeling off the wall and when I peeled it back, I discovered what appeared to be a layer of jointing compound over primer as illustrated below.



Does anyone know if I have assessed it correctly? Is it ok to use jointing compound and primer as illustrated above?

What primer was used?
Was it Polybond?

I'm assuming it was this as left behind.

Sand it, wipe it down, jointing compound, sand again etc... It will come up fine after a couple of rounds.

Also it looks rough above the switch, ease off the two screws and sand up there too while you are at it.

Thanks, any recommendations for jointing compound? Was thinking of this...

Is jointing compound even the right thing or should I be looking for plaster?

Is this an old wall?
I wouldnt be so concerned re what was used, more what caused the issue.

This is what i use:-

It is a good filler too, so excellent before decorating. Don't be afraid to take out some of the existing jointing compound/tape and re-joint and tape the area if needed.

Just down at McMahon's. It's only for 2nd/ 3rd coats. I guess I need to get jointing compound to go over the jointing tape too? I'm a complete numskull. Is the paper or fiberglass jointing tape better?

No need for tape on that.

There was a good bit of tape used previously, might not show in picture but some seriously big cracks and two plaster types....

Just thinking of getting the Screwfix jointing compound now.

Plan as follows.

1. Apply primer and tape over cracks with fibre glass jointing tape.

2. Apply jointing compound to entire area. And sand where necessary.

3. Apply second coat of jointing compound and sand.

4. Paint directly onto jointing compound.

Does anyone know if above makes sense.
