    Hi everyone,

We’re a start up business who is looking for the best rates for shipping in Ireland and Europe. We have been on to DPD who has quoted us €7 for shipping in Ireland and between 22-30 euro for Europe. That seems like crazy prices to me?!

Our items are relatively light, weighing under 500g. They will be sent in poly mailer or small boxes of an order is larger. DPD said that because were a start up business we can’t guarantee that we will be shipping 50-100 parcels a week so we’re on the highest rate for 3 months until they can see we’re shipping in those high volumes which is fair but no one is going to pay that cost for shipping.

Does anyone have any advice on how to bargain them down or about any other cheaper courier service? Fastway are a no go.

thanks in advance it’s much appreciated,
    Emily

5.96 per parcel with An Post.

Might be worth giving the An Post Rep in your area a call, they do look for
    volume though.

Postage abroad even within EU is very expensive unless you have certain volume. That what I see, German online retailers only post to Germany, Spain only Spain & France, even UK nowadays charging minimum of 10 euro to ship little thing across the water. Anpost would be good to start with or try packlink, parceldirect or parcel2go brokers to see if any better.

DPD rates are + vat too.

The an post advantage card rates don't have vat. Therefore if you charge say €4.95 shipping within Ireland, that €4.95 goes in your accounts as vat exempt income. (the shipping rate you charge MUST be under your cost for the income to be vat exempt.

Forget about targeting Europe until you get moving reasonable volume in Ireland. an Post are not great for europe as they use airmail for everything and there are substantial delays.

So my advice is to charge 4.95 shipping, (build the other €1 into your price) use an post advantage labels and if you build up to 100+ items a week you will have a good choice of carriers. GLS and Fastway are 2 others.
