Open space to learn car limits

Hey Guys, not sure if this is the right place, but is anyone aware of any open spaces where one could bring their car and give it a bit of a rag, without risking damage to another car. In the uk there's a lot of old aerodrome's that do this but can't see an equivalent here. I'd just like to learn a bit of what its like to slide the back end etc. I'm thinking the best thing might be a trackday but not sure if they have a hooligan area lol. Note not a hooligan 20 years driving but sensibly would like to learn to control car in a slide etc and have enough respect not to be doing it in a shopping centre car park!

Trackday or racing tuition day might be what you need.

    Maybe not realistic currently.

Ya trackdays at mondello are back 29 and 30th April with lots of dates over summer.

No area for messing but the track itself will keep you on your toes.

is it true that taking your own car onto a track will invalidate your insurance policy? or is that just an urban myth?

(note: maybe i should read the policy disclaimers)

hmm; to clarify - i had understood that taking a car onto a track *negated* your policy, not that it simply didn't apply on a track.
well, the logic was explained to me that taking it onto a track could cause damage which affected roadworthiness.

anyway, not track related, but many years ago (mid 90s), when we'd had snow, half melt, freeze, etc; my father brought me to the papal cross car park in the phoenix park, which was covered with about an inch of ice. was a very useful - and very fun - lesson in what a car feels like when you lose traction, and how to control it.

Generally any excuse for insurance companies so i guess in theory if you had an accident due to failure and they could prove you had been racing the car, they could make an issue of it.

You can stick 2 blank reg plates on before you go out on track if you have concerns.

Wait What? no insurance. that's not good. was hoping to organise a club event. will need to look into this. and blank reg's all round I guess - most of the cars would only have one of its colour in the country..

Quiet part of the local beach early in the morning, or a wet miserable afternoon, used to be good for this sort of thing. I know my local beach is closed to cars at the moment but not sure if all are.

It looks like there is a handling course / skid pan in Monaghan - http://roadsafetyireland.ie/track-skid-pan/ for a bit of professional instruction.

A beach sounds like a great way to end up on your roof. Wouldn't fancy try to take a quick change of direction and then have the front tyres dig in. Have seen it happen a good bit in racing.

Also. People are quite protective of their beaches these days.
Dont be surprised to have a garda to explain to

Local beach is Bettystown and I've been on that in all sorts of different motors and never had any issues. Pretty much all flat sand, more understeer than any chance of tyres digging in.
