grass lawn repair

Hi avid Gardners and lawn keepers
we installed rolled out grass last October just before all the heavy rain, snow, cold spell and heavy frost.
it managed to bounce back miraculously but it needs to be repaired. few patches did not make it. the ground last winter was quiet heavy and water logged in some parts uneven from walking on it.
so my idea is to bring in a ton of sand and rake it over the existing grass really thinly, put more seed down especially the patches where its needs it and that should give me the smooth level finish as a golf course green.

    is this a good approach?
any suggestions on how to achieve a thick lush carpet of grass
