Cherry tree pollination

I was given a young cutting from a cherry tree in a container. It is about 2 foot tall and growing nicely in the month I have had it.
The giver could only tell me it is a cutting from his garden by his wife, he didn't know if was a sweet or bitter cherry, he said they have both. I have no way of knowing if it is a self pollinator but I am assuming it is not.

If I plant it in my garden, I would like it to bare fruit in time. Do I need to plant another cherry tree to achieve pollination and if so, will any variety do? There are no cherry trees in neighbours gardens.
