Decision time

I've been offered two jobs, both as a security officer at two different biopharma companies.

    Company 1:

Had an actual face to face interview at the company. The guy who interviewed me told me about things and the tasks involved. Was informed that that the two companies have a very close relationship and that it's basically as if you're working for the pharma company themselves. All seemed fine, except for when he asked me if I was married or had kids, which left a bad taste in my mouth.

I agreed yesterday I'd be starting on Monday week.

Min security pay with no Sunday premium.

25 minute drive. Shifts are 12 hrs (6pm/am is the start/finish time); (2 days, 2 nights, then 4 days off) + repeat. Averages 42 hrs/wk

One of the benefits of this place is that there's a chance to eventually work at a specific part of the site that gets paid in part by the pharma company too. I was also told that if I were to apply for some of the production operative positions on site, that I could skip some of the steps in the application process.

8 weeks proper training. I don't know how long I can hack such long shifts, so it'd definitely be more awkward leaving this place during that time they're investing in me (than company 2) if my other career idea comes through. It would be hard for me to leave being the people pleaser that I am.

    Company 2:

It's 3 miles away. This distance might help if all the shifts are going to be 12 hours. Average of 42 hrs/wk, but I still don't know the starting time of the actual shifts.

I don't really know anything about what tasks I'll be doing in the place. The person who made the decision to hire me was a HR person in head office who I'd a phone interview with. The regional manager who I was expecting a second interview didn't bother doing so, and only rang me for a 3 minute chat to tick a few boxes for himself. Neither of them them have seen me face to face and I've no idea who'll actually be training me on site as it seems the regional manager only visits that client once a fortnight.

Got the phone of job offer yesterday shortly after offer from company 1. Received email with letter of offer that I don't want to sign yet. Induction for this place is via microsoft teams this Monday. And start date is either Wed on Thurs at the latest.

Min security pay, but Sunday premium of 55c

I was onto the regional manager again yesterday, and he seemed to reveal that the roster is a mess at the moment as they're down a person. He also told me that they're actually contracted by another security company who are contracted by the pharma company themselves, and that any communication with the pharma is via only one lady who is on site for that company!!!

One of the pros with this company is that I'm guessing it wouldn't be awkward leaving them abruptly (as there's only a few days training involved) if my other career plan worked out... as I'm likely to be doing my bus driving test within a month.

Do the induction in company 1, prepped with questions about what you'll be doing. If they can't answer them, talk to someone who can. No point making a decision in a vacuum.

You should have made a poll.

Take Company 1 2, sue Company 2 1*. Win win!

Edit: OP, you edited your post and switched the companies around!

I'd go for co. 2, barely but the asking about wife and kids is strange , do they want you to work all hours ?

For me, the answer always comes down to pay. Both employers are willing to pay your mortgage, but who is going to buy you nicer things on the weekend?

I've switched jobs for as little as a 1k annual increase in salary, because salary is the most important thing. It's the only bottom line.

No point getting money for nicer things at the weekend if you have no time at the weekend to spend it. It's not all about money.

Go with the company with the hottest employees.

When you first posted, Company 2 was the one who asked you about your wife and kids. Then you changed your post to make it Company 1. The first few comments are answering under the labels you had in the post at the time.

Not in the slightest. Will joke about anything except money.

Income is the only reason to stay in a job, or switch jobs. Have no time for this company loyalty nonsense. They're already making a profit from your work, forget about loyalty.

Would you work a 60 hour week over a 40 hour week for 10k extra?

Yes, but what about whether the staff are friendly? Or the stress involved in the work?

I think he/she was talking about rate per amount of work done.

Obviously nobody should accept a drop in pay for additional hours worked, so no

Work is work. It's for making money to get resources that you enjoy in your free time. Not for making friends. We have enough friends.

Would you stay in a toxic work environment for the sake of €1k?

Yes but even if making friends isn't an option, I'd still rather be working around people who are easy to deal with, than people who aren't. I have worked jobs in the past that I thought were quite stressful, and as a result it took me a while to unwind when I came home from work, and that therefore ate in to my free time.

Oh come on. You don't believe that one can enjoy their job?

Would you give your employer back €1000 for him to be nice to you? I hope not.

Don't care if people are demanding in work, as long as you're not taking it home with you — then it's additional work. Am surprised this is even a debate. It's work, not a hobby (he said, posting on boards at midday)
