Increase panel fence height

The fence between my house and my neighbours is quite low. It's a wooden panel between concrete H posts. What's the best way to increase the height, short of digging out and replacing the posts! Obviously I would discuss with neighbour before doing anything.

I could put a concrete panel under the wooden panels but they would be higher than the posts then. Is that a big concern other than looking odd? I have seen some post extenders but they're all wooden.

You could add an additional gravel board (the concrete board at the bottom) between each set of H posts and sit the wooden panels on top

I think the gravel board to bottom as suggested would look fine. Maybe get one to try it and agree with neighbour. As you say the timber panel will project a little above top of concrete post but should be grand.

    What is the current height?

Looks pretty high to me tbh. I wouldn't touch it. Messing with something that's in great nick too.

It's probably about 4.5/5ft high. Can see pretty clearly over it and into each others kitchens when we're in the middle of the garden.

My biggest issue would be whether it would be stable if the fence was higher than the post.

That's a bit mad. Who builds fences that low?

I'd shove in another gravel board and fill the space with a timber post extender painted to match the concrete. Dunno whether those post extenders are concave at the bottom, otherwise you'll need to modify them to fit flush to the pointed concrete post tops.

It will obviously be less stable that what you have at the moment. Will it fall over? Nobody can say as it depends on how the fence posts were put in.

Make sure you keep it under 2m at the highest points for planning compliance.

I'd measure it to be sure. The panels typically come in 1.6m - 1.8m sections, plus the 20cm concrete bottom gives your max height. It might just seem a bit low because the lowest section is hidden by the built-up garden.

If you can find a gravel board to bring that rightmost fence panel up to meet the one beside it then you should be fine without ruining the look of the fence.
