GP Referral Question

I visited my GP today who told me I have a hernia. He asked me if I had insurance and I told him I don't. He then referred me to the Hermitage, which definitely appears to be private-only.

    Is that odd?

How much could this cost? I'm seeing prices around €4000.

Best bet is to ring the doctor's surgery and ask, you could try ringing the Hermitage too and see if you'll be charged.

You can request a referral to a public clinic, but it could take months or years for an appointment.

    Good luck!

Any chance because of the pandemic it is temporarily part of the public system??

You can ask for public referral. You will be on a years long waiting list though.

The referral is for a consultant which will be 100-200.

Most consultants then have a private clinic or a public one.

Well worth the 100-200 to confirm diagnosis, then you have options for private or public.

They will even tell you the cost of a private option if you want to pay to go privately.

I went to the doctor last August and he told me I've a hernia, like yourself I have no insurance and told him that so I'm going public.

Be prepared to wait though if you are public, I was told it could be next year before I get anything done.

Keep an eye on it as well because if it gets strangulated that is very dangerous.
