New car - Volvo XC40

    Hey all,

Looking to purchase a new car. Currently looking at XC40 r design with a few extra packs thrown in. Driver assist and lounge pack

Would love to get a hybrid but we don't have the set up at home that allows for easy, secure charging. So the offers of engine are limited. You can only get the t2 engine in the xc40 which sounds underpowered at 130 bhp
They did have a t3 engine at 160 bhp that has been discontinued for some reason
Love the look of the xc40 and volvos safety rep is a strong factor for us also

Getting details from the salesman is like pulling teeth. Anyone have experience with the xc40 t2? Any advice or alternatives

Would the new Cupra Formentor interest you? It's basically a Seat so part of the VW group. They are available in 1.5 litre petrol with 150bhp. Base spec is pretty good and you would probably get one with a few more factory options for what the lessor powered XC40 is costing.

    For example:

Volvo have an all electric version of it coming out soon if you can wait and if it would interest you. It's called the C40. It looks much better.

    That is it.

Peugeot 3008 and Hyundai Tucson are both very classy and worth looking at too. The Formentor is also worth looking at as mentioned above.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Volvo are due to open order banks for MY22 in the next 3 weeks, so there may not be any info available yet for a salesman to give you. Volvo only usually release the new Model Year details just before the order banks open.

Usually, there's no significant changes from one Model Year to the next, but sometimes there is so they may be loathe to give you info on the current model (that can't be ordered at the moment) in case there are big changes on the way.

Plug-In Hybrid models doesn't have to be plugged in to run it, but you won't get the most of out it if it isn't plugged in.

Just off the phone to the Volvo dealer as I am looking at an XC40 too.
Dealer told me to wait and call back in 2 weeks. The MY22 (new version) of the XC40 will be announced next week with orders for 212 plates being taken the week after.

They don't know the details yet but expects it to remain at 0% finance.

I've priced the Mazda CX5 and Hyundai Tuscon and they both come in more than the XC40 due to the higher apr %.

(Note I am buying on pcp and trading in my old pcp car)

I'd advise waiting a couple of weeks and calling about the XC40 again.

Edit: also shop around with different dealers. I've been priced cheaper for the CX5 in tullamore than any other the other mazda dealers (around 50 per month cheaper)

Whatever about the 3008, the front lights on the Tucson look ridiculous, and the incandescent rear lights would look dated 15 years ago.

    T2 XC40 is well under-powered, as in 10/11 seconds to 100 km/h.

Not sure where the other petrol options have gone, a friend of mine bought a lovely T4 early last year.
Other problem with the XC40 is the price. By the time you have it adequately specced (auto, winter, driver assist, etc.), you might as well throw in another few grand and get an XC60.

I'm considering changing our XC60 at the moment and was half considering downsizing but the price difference and lack of engine choice made it a very easy choice to discount the XC40.

Edit: Don't let me totally put you off, the XC40 is a lovely car and I really like the design and size of it. Perhaps the MY22 models will have a bit more engine choice. They will probably be moving to the new Google infotainment too.

I take it you do not like it then. I think the badge on the back looks terrible where it is. Like they nearly forgot it and thought a we will just stick it on the rear window.
I do not have problem with the lights on the front they are different and certainly not boring and the same with the rear.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Sounds like it makes alot of sense to wait for a few weeks to see what is in MY22 offering. Once the offering is announced, what would be the typical lag time til they are available to buy

XC40 looks far better than that.

Would you consider a v60 instead? Beautiful car and more engine choice.

Isn’t that going to be 60 plus grand?

Drove the XC40 PHEV all over Christmas and into Jan. Really economical if you charge it every night with 265bhp on tap. It was €55,000 though in full R-Design! And has a 3 cylinder engine...

My problem is that I'm in a terraced house so running a cable out to the car each night isn't practical so paying the premium for the occasional time it would get use doesn't make much sense for me

Seems a few hybrids in the dealers with big spec which are way better value than the T2

    https://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/volvo/xc40/fpa/202103200381407?journey=Search

Even if you never charge this one you get the advantage of the performance and hybrid technology plus it has v high spec

Just as an addition to my other post, the other car I am looking at is the Cupra Formentor.
Very well priced with 2.9% apr. Comes with more bells and whistles than the XC40 for less money. (36k for the 1.5tsi)

But that said I'm a big fan of the Volvo so still leaning that way myself and waiting until the MY22 is announced.

Would it be much less economical than the T2 if you couldnt charge it?

XC40 looks nice. You can get it with PHEV.
