Why is the eir 1gb broadband package only available on a 24month contract. Who in their right mind would sign a 2 year deal with a company.

    Why wouldn't you?

Every mobile bill pay plan has 24 months length in this country , how broadband is different?

Mobile bill pay is different as you generally are paying back for a phone on the plan.
Does the eir ftth price stay the same for the 2 years?

Traditionally that's been so the mobile operator can recover the subsidy for the phone, not really comparable to the cheap router you get from an ISP (which isn't even always upgraded if no issues).

there's an installation fee they are building into that 24 month contract.

The guy on here from Airwire said he loses money if people don't stick with him over a certain amount of months and you still have to pay for some of the installation fee. Which he waives under 18 month contract.

So it's not exactly unreasonable for Eir to have a 24 month contract

    Router €5 (wholesale)
    Installation €150

Retail ISPs don't make a huge margin, they could easily not make any money in year 1.

Quick related question, I got an eir flyer in the door about 6 months ago saying gigabit broadband was now available at my address.

I’m a sky customer and when I enquired with them about upgrading they said they couldn’t see that fibre was available at my address.

The Vodafone website says 1000mb available at my address however.

Do eir have ownership of the connection and in that case is the only way to enable FTTH is signing up with Eir?

No, sky being slow. Call em back.

Is the installation still the same for moves and new installs?

You're spot on there, my neighbour was still on ADSL and had to get a bit shirty on the phone with them to be moved to fttc, the sly feckers tried to put him on a new contract as well..

When you out it like that I guess I can see why they have the 24months. Haven’t had Eir for broadband just sky or Vodafone would Eir ftth be recommended the 1gb service.

What's the price structure? Is it open eir or Siro?

It is open eir and house can achieve the 1,000 which is what I have at the moment. They are offering the broadband and TV for 59 a month including an extra Apple TV box for the kitchen. So seems a pretty good deal. Hopefully the connection is stable.

For the whole 2 years? Not a bad deal in fairness.
