I welded up my own hoist, but to be honest anytime I went at doing them myself, there was very little I could do. You'd still be inclined to let the pros at it when you see how good they are.

There's always someone else in the area to take over when a lad retires, you just haven't met him yet.
I'd reccomend buying your own hoist anyway, the lad that does the feet here has a new Wopa hydraulic crush which is great if i'm doing a number of cows or need a front foot pared.
But usually when i get him it's just to do a back foot or two and we can do them in my crush with my hoist which saves him setting up his crush.

The hoist is worth it though if you have to milk out a suckler cow. She can't kick when her leg is hoisted up.

Buy an electric winch and set it up over the crush. Easiest and cheapest way out.

Never thought of that patsy the next nearest to me is Montgomery in quilty 30 mile away from me an he wont come for 1 cow unless hes on way home from someplace in limerick or east Clare

Would it be worth buying a manual crate for yourself when youre at it at all? Theres a lot of pulling and dragging with them all the same but theres a greater benefit in terms of safety for both man and beast compared to a hoist.

    Better living everyone
