Preventing Swallows

I had a problem with swallows in recent years. Previous years we had left one nest be built under the roof. In the last few years nests have multiplied, even getting into the attic.
We removed the old nests over the winter. I'm anxious they do no returncome. Is there anything I can do?
If I am in the home I will be able to stop them building, but I work weekends minding an elderly lady and am gone for 2-3 nights sometimes. I would not consider removing a built nest.
In would be obliged if others could share tips you have acquired.
Also when do swallows arrive in the west of Ireland? When will I know if I've avoided them this year.

You can get transparent strip of spikes that you can screw to the wall where the nests were. Its the only thing I have found that works and is relatively unobtrusive

Try fishing line attached to masonry nails, 11/2" from soffit and 2" from Wall, at least 8 lbs line.
