Commuting/ family car

I’ll be commuting to Dublin two days a week from September. Round trip is 260 km. I was and am considering electric ( e-Niro) but it would have to be a brand new car and I’m hesitant about taking the hit in interest and depreciation.

So I’m also looking at Diesel engines. In the past we have bought six year old cars with lowish mileage and keep to the end well serviced. This approach has served us well in terms of annual costs and now I’m looking to replace an 06 Mercedes C200. It’s perfectly running still but the seats don’t suit me on long journeys. ( new NCT if anyone interested)

So it needs to be comfortable and preferably automatic and reasonable economy. And decent power. Budget 15 k. I like a leather interior too but it’s not a deal breaker.

Looking at Volvo V60 right now (d3 or d4 engines) ( estate would prob suit better but saloons also considered).

Anything else I should be looking at?

If you're concerned with running costs, I suggest to consider Renaults DCI engine megane,
I do about 450km of commute per week on a renault fluence 1.5 DCI engine and a full tank of €60+ will give me a range of 1000+km. DCI engines are considered to be one of the most economical and reliable deisel engine out there, you will find them on Nissans and Mercedes models. But again engine wouldn't be as powerful as other deisel engines out there. For that price range of €15k you can get top of the range fluence or megane, leather seats, sensors and other latest bells and whistles.

Haven’t managed to look at anything yet but Volvo V60 is still the front runner. Also considering Mondeo, Passat, octavia and superb all in estate form in their bigger Diesel engines. Comfort and economy are main considerations. Want an auto box and preferably leather interior.

You can't go wrong with superb, plenty of boardies will tell you that

Would the superb be more economical/ cheaper to run than the v60?

My main attraction to Volvo is the good seats. My back really suffered in the Mercedes so it’s really important next car is comfortable.

Volvo do have well renowned seats but it's always very personal as to what you find comfy.

Yes a volvo would be more expensive to service and repair than a skoda.

Just looked up real world economy and Volvo slightly better than Skoda. Think it’s a case of doing some test drives now.

It looks good! I’m going to look at one with auto box early next week but I have doubts that it will suit. Used to driving cars with more power here.
