WTD - Reasonably (cheap!) priced Road Frame for commuter build?

After years of loyal service I have decided to retire my Giant TCR SL training bike. The Kinesis RTD replacement is built and awaiting it's first spin this morning.

I would like to take all the bits off the Giant and build a commuter / poxy weather training bike - my SS died and I've been using an old cross bike.

What frame would people suggest - reasonably priced, threaded BB, Alu/steel?

I would consider 2nd hand if anyone has anything suitable - 56cm?

get an old lightweight steel frame; it'll last for decades.

What about the Wiggle Brand-X RD-01 frameset? Aluminium frame, threaded BB, carbon fork, takes 28c tyres, no front mudguard eyelets though.

Geometry looks fairly similar to a TCR.

Had one before when I was waiting on a warranty replacement from Ribble. Very adequate frameset. Well worth the money.

how much work do you want to put into it?
    i've a frame which is without doubt a project frame, 55cm 1950s 531 frame.

As soon as I can go to the UK to pick up my new frame & forks I'll have a PX London Rd going cheap.

Disc frame, takes up to 42c tyres, mounts for guards etc.

I might, might be getting rid of an old trek sl1000, but might not be any upgrade improvement on what it's replacing.

Was my good bike at one point, then my spare, then my commuter then a spare again and then a turbo bike.

I think it's the only bike I havnt had an accident on (minor or otherwise)

Tis about 13 years old mind

Thanks Weepsie - part of my concern is that I worry a bit about a failure on an ageing carbon frame. I bought the TCR frame 2nd hand on here and I’ve put 60k+ Kms on it since. My concern is that sooner or later (probably on a steep descent!) something will break with catastrophic results.

Thanks Magicbastarder - probably a bit more work than I’d be willing to take on at the moment! But many thanks anyway.

Thanks Saccades - does it have calliper mounts too or just disc? Really want to keep costs to a minimum and move parts from the TCR .... there’s already 5 other bikes in the garage!!!

Disc only unfortunately - I suspect I'll struggle to pass it on tbh as its from that briefish period of road qr disc frames. It's a shame as it's a brilliantly practical frame for anything except racing.

Only just had chance to see this post now - I'm fine with that, although I can't guarantee when I can get to the UK to pick up my new frame (potentially July unfortunately)..

Donation to glen of imaal mountain rescue as payment.

Just by way of an update - I bought a Dolan Preffisio aluminium frame and had it built using the parts from the Giant. Had the wheels rebuilt at the same time. Really happy with the result - perfect commuter and I’ll also use it on really crappy winter days to train on!

Hoping to go over in October, so theoretically yes but you'll have to be patient.

Patience is one of my many virtues. I'd be very interested if it's available. Keep me posted. Thanks, Paul

If Paul's patience runs out, I'd love to be considered for that frame

The reach figures on the Dolan website (https://www.dolan-bikes.com/preffisio-frameset) seem to be all over the place (eg XS has 10 mm more reach than medium and the same reach as XXL). I mailed them about it but they never replied. How did you find their size guide, and what's the geometry like - more endurance or race?
