Anyone been diagnosed with bile reflux?

I've had terrible problems with my stomach and while a H-pylori breath test was negative, I was weakly positive for SIBO. However, my symptoms correspond to bile reflux and it quite frankly would explain everything about the hell I have been going through with my tummy. It also apparently causes SIBO.

So, I am wondering if anyone here has been diagnosed with it? Would a scope be enough? Or did you have to get other tests?

    Hi Op,

I had terrible issues with my stomach and after a scope, I was diagnosed with bile reflux.

The specialist went through my diet and removed something such as coffee, orange juice and red meat. After a few weeks I felt great and have no had any issues and it’s been nearly two years. So listen to the specialist and you will feel a lot better

    Best of luck

Were you given any medicines? I am so tired of the pain and at this stage, I'd do anything to get rid of it.

Did you have bad pain too?

No medication was given that I remember, I have had many years of issues with my stomach with pain and discomfort. I had pain in my side too which was caused by the issue. Honestly with the tweaks to my diet made a massive difference. One thing I had to do was keep a food diary and also when I felt bad and then look if there was anything I ate in the previous few days that triggered it.

I’m sure everyone is different and it can effect people in different ways but a specialist will diagnose it and get you on the right path.

Specialist said I had reflux. Sent me back to the GP who gave me Lanzaprole (sorry if I've misspelled it) after a few months, there was no improvement so he changed it to some other pill which also did nothing for me so I gave them up. I feel sure I need a change of diet but was never sent to a dietician, nor did I receive any advice except to try over the counter remedies! I've no idea what I should change, include or exclude. The reflux makes me cough really badly and with the lack of sleep I really feel drained. No idea what to do.

Do you have acid reflux or bile reflux? They require different treatments. Lanzaprole is for acid reflux. Bile reflux is treated by other meds such as ursodeoxycholic acid, statins like cholestyramine, and domperidone.

My mistake, I have acid reflux, thought they were similar though. I don't know enough about it though. Thanks for clarifying. Did anyone get any dietary advice?

I am booked into a dietician but need to get the scope first, and of course, it is private. Nothing is ever available on our public system, it seems. :(

The other issue is that sometimes people actually have low acid when they are told they have high acid. The post by "Posterboy" in this thread goes into detail about it: https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/122641-gluten-sensitivity-and-gastritis-maybe/. If you do in fact have high acid, there are lots of things you can do and there is a ton of info on the acid reflux diet online.

Many thanks. I've read a lot of that, skimmed a lot too, but he linked to another site which discusses probiotics and prebiotics. I had already been researching myself online quite a lot and saw advice regarding Kefir. Kefir is a tad expensive so I've been adding it to natural yogurt and having it for breakfast with fruit, and it seems to be helping quite a bit. I've been sleeping much better too which is quite a surprise to me. I'm just mentioning it in case its of any value to others.

    Hello Everyone.

I wonder would anyone have any information on my symptoms as nothing has been diagnosed yet. I've had 2 scopes done the first detected h pylori and was treated with antibiotics. I have been rested and that's completely gone now. I still have chronic heartburn, sore throat, dry cough and of the past few days vomiting added to the list. I take 40mg ppi every morning which I think sometimes makes me feel worse. I watch my diet to some extent, I don't eat a lot of crap like fried food, carbonated drinks , caffeine or alcohol. I feel absolutely awful and at my wits end with all this. I'm currently waiting on a ph test. I've been looking into acid reflux surgery I think it's called nissen something or other. I'm really starting to feel very low as nothing is working for me. Appreciate any advice. Thank you

I had acid reflux years ago, I used to dilute 2 table spoons of apple cider vinegar on glass of water with my meal, very helpful, but after removing all processed food from my diet few month later acid reflux gone.

How's your water intake? I suffered badly with reflux for years, took PPIs for quite a while. The main changes I made was not eating late at night and starting to drink a lot more water. It probably helps that I'm not drinking so much alcohol now either. It rarely bothers me at all these days thankfully.

I suffered for years with “heartburn” it used to get so bad I’d physically get sick. Eventually they found and ulcer and that was causing my issues. Had to change my diet after surviving the perforated ulcer.

diet seems to be a huge part of reflux

Since I originally posted, I have had an endoscopy and found that my whole issue was that I was being cross-contaminated with gluten (I am coeliac). I also have a hiatal hernia which is causing GERD, along with oesophagitis. I do not have bile reflux, however. I have acid reflux.

I have found the following to be lifesavers:

    1) Finding the source of the gluten cross-contamination*.

    2) Eating a low lactose diet.

    3) Not lying down after a meal. I never went for a nap or anything, but in the evenings I would lie back on the couch while watching my shows. I now understand that that is a *terrific* way to get acid to flow up into my duodenum and cause pain. So I don't lie back until circa two to three hours after eating.

    4) Avoiding acidic foods like tomatoes and rancid/trans fats.

    5) Walking at least 3 km after my largest meal of the day.

All of the above have helped so much with my GERD and hiatal hernia so much. When I originally posted I was in terrible pain every day but now I am doing well most days unless I eat something with tinned tomato or lie down soon after eating. I also don't walk that much every day, but if the pain strikes (from eating tomatoes or a lot of lactose) it helps me a tremendous amount.

*The gluten cross-contamination is really what started the whole GI mess off.

just off topic but I think important to mention, we become more sensitive to gluten since the introduction of Pesticides there is number of studies that link gluten intolerance to what actually being sprayed over the crops.

    https://www.healthline.com/health-news/nonstick-pans-may-increase-risk-of-celiac-disease#Gender-influences-risk

In other hand removing gluten from e.g. wheat grain, dramatically increase GI and inflammatory markers not that I suggest to eat gluten but perhaps we have to address the real cause why we become so sensitive about?

    mirrors my story.

PPI’s worked great, I cut out alcohol and carbonated drinks, took the course of PPI’s, had a second scope done about a year later everything looked great, mirrored how I felt. Never an issue since.

i eat healthy, moderate soft drinks intake , gave up alcohol.

just dropping in here as stomach issues are a big part of my life and sharing is good (could do with a super thread)

my issues have gone on for nearly 3 years. Got a gastroscopy back then and was diagnosed with grade 3 gastritis, H pylori and acid reflux. Severe but strange as my symptoms were mild. I’d rate on the pain scale a 3/10 at the very most and absolutely no vomiting or nausea.

done the medication and stool test was negative for pylori. Then my symptoms came back a few months later. Now for a long time my main symptom is a dull constant pain Resembling a stitch (like a hot ball) on the left upper side of my abdomen.

I done another stool test for pylori and this was positive. Apparently this is unbelievably rare and hasn’t been resolved.

my diet for months and months consists of salmon, spuds, honeydew melon, kefir, Actimel, scrambled eggs, brown bread, Soups, avocado. I take mollers complex, probiotics pills. Who knows if it makes any difference. The results are mixed. It can go away for one or two weeks but I’ve never truly shaken it.

the doctors do their best but I can’t really trust their judgement, they don’t speak English as a first language and I’m constantly passed between one specialist to another so don’t build relationships with any of them.

im doing a sibo test right now. We’ll see where that gets us but I’ve not much hope.

Edit- I’m not overweight and was possibly approaching underweight when these problems started.
