Putting a hedge and/or low picket fence in front garden?

    Hi!

I have next door neighbours whose children have repeatedly ruined any garden plants by playing football from their garden into mine. There are also other issues with the neighbours which are upsetting. This has gone on for years. It didn't matter as much before the house was my primary residence, but now it does. I am fed up now and want to put in a hedge. Only one other house of the 40 has a hedge on one side. The gardener who is going to put in the hedging/picket fence says there might be bye law preventing same from when the houses were built. I am the second owner so don't know anything about this. There is a boundary line between the gardens - i.e. small flat stones placed at regular intervals down the centre between my garden and my neighbours. If I put in a picket fence of 3ft in height or put some hedging plants in which would be 4ft in height along the border with my neighbour, is there likely to be a problem? The garden is 16 feet long by 20 across. I have spoken to the neighbours many times about this but to no avail.

Are you planning on locating the fence actually on the shared boundary and then hedge on your side ? If so I'd say you need consent from your neighbour. I trust they are not interested in sharing cost. Maybe just plant a hedge on your side ? Can't see there being a byelaw prohibiting this unless some specific condition on contract of sale or planning permission.
