I left my job voluntarily a few weeks ago and I was told to apply for job seekers allowance as soon as possible or else I'll be asked how am I supporting myself later on. Is there a chance I could be rejected because I had a job and quit?

It will depends on the reason you left, definitely apply straightaway. Is it jobseekers allowance or benefit you will be applying for? Did you have previous contributions of prsi that would give you benefit or for some reason is it just the means tested one you are entitled to.

If your claiming Jobseekers Benefit it may be best to wait until the possible disallowance period is over before applying if you do not have an acceptable reason for leaving your employment voluntarily.

You may not be disallowed for the full 9 weeks or at all even if you can show a good reason for leaving but hard to know until you make your application.

    Do not wait to apply.

On paper yes they can not give you anything for 9 weeks. But in my experience it was immediately. Don’t wait and just get the application in ASAP, better not to assume they’ll not process for 9 weeks
