Hi guys what is the current situation with pet grooming? Are groomers allowed to operate at the moment?

Yes it is considered an essential service for animal welfare. I was jealous when my dog got groomed last month. :pac:

My groomer has been saying no - only for welfare issues only

Anyone I know who’s a legit business(ie insured) is only doing it with a vet letter to say it’s essential. I’m sure your vets would do a letter for you though?

All groomers that I know of have been working away the whole time on the grounds of it being an animal welfare issue.

Point number 8. in this article says it clearly. It is not considered essential (unfortunately) but vets can refer on welfare cases to groomers if they feel the dogs health or welfare are at risk due to lack of grooming.
That being said, as there is all over the country, not everyone is sticking to these regulations as it is a grey area so open to a little interpretation. Personally I wish I could open again, I’d be in less contact with people than I would be going to dunnes doing the weekly shop. But anyway, no, groomers shouldn’t be open for business as usual at the minute and if you feel your dog is in need, then contact your vet and they can refer you :)

Pet Mania are operating their grooming services as I got Alfie groomed with them in February :)

I got my terrier groomed a few weeks ago. He needed it because despite my best efforts, he was becoming matted underneath. I am lucky that my groomer has a contact-free drop off area so I ring her when I'm there, drop him into the gated area and then she comes out to collect him. It's the same then when picking him up and I just pay by bank transfer.

It's certainly happening. A neighbour of ours appears to be getting their bichon frise groomed regularly. It gets picked up and dropped off by the groomer in their car. To be honest I can't really see the issue as there's no human to human contact going on in that situation.

We got our dog groomed in Petmania at the start of January and then last week again.

Our usual groomer (one person operation) were closed since Christmas but have just opened back up (probably because the likes of Petmania have been grooming dogs and then other groomers have been doing it on the quiet)

I’m based in North Wicklow and my groomer is open during this lockdown .. she has a few stricter measures in place .. your not allowed enter the shop (it’s a proper retail unit - not at someone’s house) , you must meet her outside the door, no cash - all grooms must be paid online / PayPal etc

Our groomer not working- bit the bullet and did it ourselves - turned out great but took over 1 hour and I’ve additional respect for groomers now- got the vet to do nails as not comfortable doing those
