Broadband without a phone line installed: options?

I gutted this old house and put a concrete floor in it. There was an old phone line but we've been using Virgin Media for the past few years so had no need for it (Virgin gave us our home phone, broadband and tv without any need for a phone line).

I'm moving from Virgin as they put up the bill by €360 for the year (from €62 to €92 pm). Given the non-existence of that phone line, what options do I have company wise for my broadband/tv/phone in Dublin? Thanks

I might be wrong but any company that uses Siro would work, if available in your area.

Just checked my address at that link, and unfortunately it says "SIRO is not yet available at this address".

In that case you're stuck with mobile or satellite broadband

You can also find what's left of the phone line and get someone to run it to a suitable location? What does Airwire say for your Eircode?

Is VDSL what Virgin gives? Who are the providers of VDSL? I had assumed Virgin was providing 'Fibre to the home' but according to the above that's not available at this Eircode.

You can get VDSL through any of the usual providers. Eir, Vodafone, Sky, Digiweb etc..

    It'd be worth ringing around.

Digiweb i used years ago and lost line of sight to obstacles in the way.

Most likely because you haven't got an actual working phone line.

Like you I was using VM and hasn't used the phone line in more than ten years. I switched to Vodafone fibre. OpenEir came out and ran a new fibre connection via the duct, bypassing the old phone cable.

    This lists a few:

I had 3 broadband for a year and it was pretty good a bit crowded at times but very rarely failed.
Assuming you have a good 4g or 5g signal out there it might be worth a try.

If you are looking for a combined bundle Broadband/TV/phone without satellite dish or cable, your options are Vodafone & Eir. Vodafone re-sell off Eir's lines - so either way you will be using Eir's VDSL (Fibre-to-the-Cabinet) for now. Even if you weren't using it, the line is probably still there, and it should be straightforward to get Eir to reconnect it. It's worth getting sorted out, because Eir in the process of replacing all their fibre-to-the-cabinet with fibre-to-the-home (FTTH), and you will need to find the Eir duct when this happens, so they can pull the fibre right into your home.

Your VM connection wasn't fibre-to-the-home - it was copper coax to their nearest cabinet.

Sky also do a Broadband/TV/phone bundle. They also use Eir's VDSL for the Broadband, but they use their own satellite dish for TV - so you will need to get a satellite dish for this option. Their are other re-sellers on Eir's VDSL - but I don't think any of them do normal TV services.

Don't go near mobile for TV or Satellite for Broadband - these will not be reliable.

It sounds like the OP concreted over the UG drop, if so the KN lad coming to install won't get very far without a kango hammer. OP would be best doing some work to find the old drop further out and provide access to it.

Check if the location is 5g enabled with any of the networks

I've 5g at one location I work in and I have consistent 360mb

An update on this as it might give clarity to somebody else in the same position.

This morning the OpenEir (KN was on the van) man came out. As the house has concrete floors and external insulation he couldn't find any evidence of the old copper phoneline. He said that they could extend connections on the street to the top of my drive and then I'd have to cover the cost of a trench from there to the house. Additionally, I would have to ask the external insulators who did the house to come out and put a hole through the external insulation. It sounded like a lot of work to get a type of broadband that is apparently going to be replaced anyway.

So I asked him about the fibre broadband rollout. He said he knew it was being installed near here but didn't know the date when it was expected to be rolled out at this address. So, in short I won't be going with Eir. I did ring Eir to inform them that I couldn't use their service and ask to where I should return their broadband parcel.

I also asked Eir would they have a date for fibre broadband being rolled out to my Eircode. He said I'd have to contact the National Broadband Plan for that information. I went to the National Broadband Plan's website here, put in my Eircode and got this message: "Your premises is not in the Intervention Area, as other service providers operate there."

Does anybody know where I could find out when fibre broadband would be at my Eircode? Thanks.

    You can't.
    Available at maximum 100M/20M

Tech was wrong. You're over 30Mb so no NBI now or ever. What will cover you is if IFN, that doesnt have dates for the most part. Its coming, probably a few years for most of the country.

Stay with Virgin, get out a kango hammer, its your call.

You are going to have to run a duct at some stage if you ever want fibre in the future. You might as well run the duct now, rather than having to do it in a hurry when Eir rock up with fibre on your road. Once the duct is in place, with a draw string, it will be very straightforward to replace the copper with fibre when it comes. Eir have committed to migrating urban areas from FTTC to FTTH over the next 3 years (their IFN programme), so if you intend staying in your house, it's worth sorting this out.
