Hi All , I wonder if anyone has any experience of this . I noticed that I haven't a class c1 entitlement on my new type driving license so I made an enquiry with the licencing authority and was told I had the entitlement up to 1999 , but it had not been renewed after that , and since more than 10 years have elapsed I would have to resit a test etc . What I am still in the process of finding out is how that could have happened . It would be great if anyone could shed some light on how this could have come about , and what I might be able to do about it .

Did you let your license to go out of date for more than 10 years or did they not add C1 category when you renewed in 1999?

Did you do a medical on your last renewal? My last renewal was in 2012 and the man at the desk said I'd lose the C1 category unless I did the medical. I went off and did the medical and I still have C1.

You would or should have been told (I was) that you needed to do a medical for that class to transfer. If not it didn't transfer.

They didn't add the c1 when I renewed in 1999 . At this point I don't know why . I don't remember anything about exactly what transpired at the counter when I was renewing it .

No medical and no mention of one at any time .

If you don't remember anything that transpired at the counter, then you may have forgotten that they asked about the medical. :D I was in exactly the same situation in 2000 and they asked if I wanted C1, but it is probably down to the person who was doing the renewing

It was a paper application in 1999. Looks like you didn't tick the EC1 box or do the eye test.
Lots of people surrendered licences rather than go to the doctor back then

By any chance did you transfer from an English licence?

Hi , no , I didn't transfer from an English license . Almost 22 years on I don't remember exactly what transpired at the counter that day . It could be that I failed to tick the box . There was definitely no talk of a medical or eye test , but then if I didn't tick that box there probably wouldn't be . I wonder if it would be possible to retrieve a copy of the application form through a FOI request , if it exists .

I'd say that they'd have no reason to ask, they work on what you gave them. If you ticked the box, you'd have to produce the medical report. They might have mentioned at that stage that you were missing paperwork. Can't say if papers like that would be even saved, being before the digital age. It's worth asking though.

I know it's a long shot but I have heard of a number of errors being made back then . A friend of mine had a motorbike entitlement not transferred years ago but when he enquired about it in 2016 he got it put back on . I know that's different than the c1 but it shows mistakes can be made . Assuming it wasn't his mistake of course , maybe he didn't tick the box !

They stopped allowing automatic renewal of C licences a good while back and introduced a test for new applicants or a medical for renewals. The OP didn't renew: like many others at the time either because they never used the C licence anyway, didn't want to pay a GP for a medical, or just hadn't the time or inclination to do it.
