Siro installation point

    Hi all,

Siro is being rolled out in my area, I currently have VM. The modem is upstairs in the back room inside a comms cabinet. I used an old coax TV point installed by VM by the previous owner in that room so it supplies a connection point to the VM modem.

I want to know how do I go about getting a Siro point in that room, I remember in a pervious home I lived in I had an engineer out to install a DSL point and he refused to put it on the right of my hallway were the socket was, it wasn’t that it wasn’t possible he said he is putting it were the old DSL point was located.

I am afraid that they will put the point in the hall or sitting room and I won’t be able to connect it to the router in my cabinet, is there a company who installs the points that I can speak to? I am willing to pay for it whatever it costs.

    Thanks

AFAIK they aren't as limited as that DSL installer was. I got mine installed under my stairs as that's where my CAT6 cables are terminated. they had no issue with this what so ever... So they are somewhat flexible but that wasn't an upstairs install. The installer who attended my home didn't have any ladder with him.

Maybe see if there is any location in the house which you can run a CAT6A cable to the comms cab? Just so you have that problem addressed in advance if they refuse to pipe it in upstairs.

DSL was limited to where the first guy put the line in for the most part. SIRO will be limited by how they're reaching the house, if they're using existing ducts you may be asked to fit it near to the external ESB box (if present). Your best indicator is looking at what neighbours that are already installed have.

    Hi stevek93,

Where the termination point for the SIRO cables is placed is obviously dependendent upon your property. SIRO is the backbone and services that make use of it are sold by various ISPs (e.g. Digiweb, Pure telecon, etc.), so all that will likely be happening is that the SIRO installers will run a fibre cable into the nearest convenient point in the house/unit, leaving a coil in the ceiling space, riser, cabinet, or wherever convenient. Should you then opt to purchase a broadband service from an ISP that provides a SIRO option, the ISP will ship their preferred Wi-Fi router to you (as specified in the broadband package you have purchased) and arrange for SIRO to perform the installation.

Most likely scenario based upon my experience: The SIRO installers will arrive and mount a fibre to 1000BASE-LX modem (16cm x 9cm x 5cm – H x W x D box) at a convenient point based upon the maximum length of the fibre cable coil (no joins) – they will use a staple gun for surface runs. They will then then attach the modem via a very short Ethernet cable (0.5m at most as speed drops rapidly) to the router. Note that the fibre modem needs power connection via a mains power adapter (plug-pack).

You could try contacting SIRO prior to the pre-cabling to see if you can arrange for the cable tail to be coiled in a suitable location for you. Fibre joins are of course, possible but this is an unlikely option, though it is worth you discussing the possibility with SIRO (as the ISPs just contract SIRO to perform the final installations). Don't forget that the maximum bend radius for the fibre cable is approx. 5cm.

The other thing you could do yourself is to determine where the fibre modem will likely be fitted (remembering the power requirement) and run a cat7 cable from there to where you want the router mounted.

I have a similar problem in that Siro pulled a duct through to the electric meter when they dug up the estate (but never pulled actual fiber cable from the distribution point in the road) but it's on the opposite side of the house to where I want the connection. Virgin had the same issue as their duct ended in the box next to the electric box. They were happy to tack the cable round the side of the house, put some of it in a drain along the front of some of the house round to where I want it. It's the virgin install type that needs a mains socket so assume is also a newer fiber cable from virgin.

Do I need to somehow talk to Siro themselves before an ISP or can I talk to the likes of Digiweb and they'll sort out what needs to be done with whoever actually installs?
