Hi I've a car due for NCT shortly and wondering about tyre age causing a fail. Spare wheel in particular is brand new, never used and 8 year old.

    Thanks

Tyre age is always an advisory. Unless there's visible degradation of the rubber it will pass.

If tyres are in good nick but older than 6 years you get an advisory, but they still pass.

Advisory Pass applies where the date of manufacture is obvious on the tyre, a tyre older than six years.

There's a myth going around that spare wheels (if present) are treated the same as the wheels on the car. This may be the case for the British MOT but it isn't the case for the NCT. You can't fail on the condition of a spare tyre no matter how bad it is, you might get an advisory but it is not clear from the NCT manual if this is an official advisory or if the tester just advises you verbally if he happens to see something.
Examination is confined to tyres fitted to the road wheels. If, however, any defect on a tyre carried on a
spare wheel is seen, the driver should be advised.
Defects in a spare wheel tyre should not be considered a reason for failure.

I think the spare wheel is tested in the DOE

Yep - totally right. I recently took my mothers 11 year old car with the original tyres to the NCT - passed but with advisory for all four.

Tyres even if never used get old and become dangerous.
