I want to hire a one tonne (approx) digger to do some hard landscaping out the front of the house. I've just spent the morning doing it by hand and my back is in bits. My other half says its too dangerous as we are on the main road and what if I hit someone (insurance) ... never mind that I get hit of course, ha.

Give her the shovel she wont be so worried then :-)
Not sure about the insurance or your situation but could you corden off the area with cones and tape or have someone with you ?

You won't get insurance without the correct safe pass/training.

probably cheaper to hire a man and machine for the ay than to hire the machine let alone pay insurance on top
