Calf registration question

Hi folks. I bought a cow last back end and she has calved last week here. Went to register the calf tonight and it seems her last calf was lying in the rushes for a couple of months as according to herdwatch she is only 264 days calved on paper. What is the earliest you can register a calf to a cow? Is it worth ringing the Department or will I be lining myself up for an inspection?

You haven't done anything wrong. I'd ring icbf and ask when can you register it.

Same happened me on a few occasions with bought in cows. Fellas obviously registering calves 2 or 3 months after they're born to make them look better come sale time.

I can't remember off the top of my head what the threshold is for allowing 2 births to be registered, I think it's either 270 days or 290 days. The Herdwatch app should thrown up an error when you try to register the calf and it should tell you there? If it's 270 days then just wait the extra few days to register, if it's 290 you'll need to wait 3 weeks.

For me, I just went ahead and registered them when they were born. You'll need to fill out a form and send it to your local DVO (I think it's a er94b or something like that) just stating that all the details are correct and it's not a mistake in the dates. The DVO will send someone out to look at the cow and calf to check if they look in order, but that's all, it's not a proper department inspection. They'll be in and out in 5 mins. It'll be more likely that the previous owner will get a more thorough visit from the dept.

As whelan said, you haven't done anything wrong, so wouldn't worry about getting in touch with the dept about it.
