Advice on purchase of Golf or similar

    Hi,

My daughter is looking to buy her first car. She would like to get a VW Golf.
Budget is €7500 tops. Looks like 2011 or 2012 is where she would be landing with that budget.
Any thoughts on whether to go petrol or diesel. My thinking would be petrol as she would be doing small enough mileage (<10k km per year).
Also, is the whole Golf thing a good idea at this budget? Are there other cars she should be considering?

    Thanks.

7500 is a hell of a lot of money for a 10 year old hatchback.

    Just Sayin

Agreed - but that seems to be what Golfs of that age are selling for.
Any other recommendations for that budget - she's not keen on Polo, Micra, Yaris or Fiesta - not fussy at all!:pac:

One thing about vw golf, they are expensive but treat the car right and you're sure as he'll going to get a fair whack of your money back compared to other cars.
Golf is fine for a starter car, I've a feeling petrol are going to be cheaper than the diesels to insure and will probably suit her better.
Theres standard engines which people here claim are very underpowered in a 1.4 and there's also a few different versions of tsi engine which my girlfriend actually has. It's fine, not a bother on it. They start at 1.2.

If she wants a golf, it's a good sensible choice. Popular car for a reason.

Daughter is on her second golf, it's a 2012, 1.6tdi, 105bhp. I've had several golf's over the years ranging from 1.6 diesel to 2.0l diesels. Couple of things to watch out for with the 1.6 diesels, ask of the egr valve has ever been changed as they give trouble and are expensive to fix. Clutch amd flywheel in higher mileage ones also need attention from time to time but that could be an issue with any car really.

Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia, Renault Megane all offer much better value for money. I would say she could even get into a MK3 Laguna too. Ford Focus is another much better car.
What does she want or need petrol of diesel. I would say if she does not do to much driving a Nissan Leaf Leaf could be an option too

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I don't see the point in going diesel if it's only going to be driving small miles. Any Golf diesel you buy of that age will most likely have fairly serious miles on it too.

I was in same position last year. Bought my daughter a 2012 Toyota Auris diesel for €5200. She's not doing big mileage, especially due to covid, but the price was right.

The looks aren't to everyone's taste but, Honda Civic? Got a 131 model for 10K summer 2019. It's super economical on diesel.
Just make sure there's a reverse camera and/or parking sensors for the new driver as rear visibility isn't it's strong point.

    This too shall pass.
