I recently bought a fixed generator which I need to make a hole in a mass concrete wall tmfor the pto shaft to go through. Anyone know where I could get a drill to make the hole or how do I go about it?

You would need to phone a hire place and ask if the have a core drill that they hire out. Tell them the diameter you require.
Otherwise, there are folk advertising services for core drilling on Done Deal.

You'd need to tell them it is a mass concrete wall - I'm pretty sure they have rebar in them so just be sure they can work with it - or figure out how to drill between the bars.

Use a fresh masonry bit. Maybe 14 mm. make lots of holes in the circle you want and blow it out with sledge. Hire places don’t like hiring out core bits unless your a trusted customer. Their expensive and don’t last well on rebar.

Which province are you based in?
If you look up 'Core drill cutting xxxxxxx' you'll get some hits.
Just check their listing that they core drill reinforced concrete - or give them a call and state it is a mass concrete wall which will have rebar.
It's the neatest way of doing it.

Just ring one of the hole companies and get them to do it, because unless you have used a core drill a few times before it will take you over a day to do it. Where as a local company that specialise in that type of work will have it done in a couple of hours for around €500. Where as you will have numerous trips to the hire center, dust all over the place, a few bloody knuckles and the humor will be foul to add to it & as Funkey_Monkey said it will be neat leaving it easier to work with in future.

As above plus ask a local builder who does core drilling locally.

I've used a core drill here before, but on a double block wall to add an air vent. Made 2 full holes at the time. I rented it from local plant hire / builder providers.
I don't remember it being that much hardship. A 5 or 6 inch wide mass concrete wall is another job altogether.

I hired one a few years back to bore a few 4 inch holes in a 9 inch slatted tank wall for drainage pipe from a dungstead and a collecting yard. No real bother using it, it just takes a bit of time to set up.

You drill a 12 or 14mm (I can’t remember exactly now) hole a certain distance away from the big hole you want first. There’s an anchor bolt that goes into this hole to mount the core drill on. Doesn’t have to be overly accurate with the measurement as there’s about 3 inches of adjustment on the mounting of the core drill to get your exact position. When that’s done start it up and drill away. Plenty of water and take your time.

Again I can’t remember exactly but I think it was somewhere in the region of €160 to €180 to hire it for the day and you’ve to drive in to collect it and drive in to drop it back so half a day disappears very quick. If you’ve only the one hole to drill it could be worth getting a price off someone to do it and not have your day tied up at it.

John Byrne concrete cutting. He did one for me a couple of years ago when he was in the area. Half an hour and I think I gave him €100 for it but that could be €150 as its a while ago. Never mind ballcocksing around hiring etc.

when I was building the office I bought a core drill with a few different coring bits 2, 4 ,5 & 6 bits

use an SDS bit to put a pilot hole . then drill in 1/2 day and out half way

I bought the drill for €180 2nd hand with the bits and it was an ex HSS hire shop one from UK. the lad selling them had a selection of about 10 to pick from.

Local hire shop is €35/45 a day for one with a 110 box. I have mine well paid for and also have it

Is the hole intended for the pto shaft of a tractor to go in through to drive the generator? If so, you might need something bigger than a hole. You would need to reverse the tractor in spot on every time if the shaft hasn't much movement within the hole, and then there's the height consideration if you ever use a different tractor to power it.
