Last night a person/persons rang my phone.. at the start they had their number blocked but one of the calls then showed their number. It was very uncomfortable.. rang guards since & they couldn’t do much for me, obviously to not answer these calls if it happens again..

Do you think they were ringing you on purpose, or just anyone?

Donedeal have some info how they advise people to deal with nuisance callers
    https://hello.donedeal.ie/hc/en-us/articles/201121282-Unwanted-Calls

You can also block the number on your phone so no traffic from them will even show up.

Have no idea, I will block their number if it continues

How many calls are we talking about here and what happened when you first answered? I assume it was better over the top if you want to the guards. Did they just hang up or did the laugh or speak? I assume they didn't leave a message when you didn't answer. Do you have a reason to suspect someone would target you or is it just random bad luck?

    Mod Note

Just a heads up OP (and anyone replying) - the thread has been moved to the Personal Issues Forum and the Charter for this forum now applies and can be found here. Personal Issues is a forum where an OP looks for advice on something troubling them and posters are asked, when replying, to offer advice to help you resolve your issue.

    Thanks

Not quite sure what you are asking advice on here OP?

Is somebody you know harassing you by calling and hanging up when you answer???

Obviously just block their number. If they keep using different numbers to get in touch over a period of time and you know who it is you might have more to go to the guards with.

Personally this happened to me as part of a scam, I kept getting calls from different UK numbers, same (non UK country) accents, kept blocking each number and it stopped after a couple of weeks.

Is there a reason why you contacted the police right away? Strikes me as a bit ott unless you left something out

Have you had issues like this before or have you someone who is upsetting you in some way?
One call wouldn't bother people usually, could be just someone misdialling.

OP why not block their number now? I got a weird call off a number last week and listened to about 10 seconds of it before hanging up and blocking. It’s really easily done these days and nips all the potential crap right in the bud.

Thanks for replies, I don’t know whether they know me or not? About 2 months ago I had 3 or 4 calls from a blocked number. When i answered it there was just silence. Again the calls were late at night. I don’t know if it’s the same person? I have the phone number. Is there any way to find out who it might be?

I presume you have googled the number and got no results? Why don’t you just call the number (with hidden caller Id or with an unregistered sim)?

If it is a prank caller they are sloppy

Call them back off a pay phone on the street.

If they answer then state the call is been recorded, they must cease any prank calls or it will become a serious issue....

Block the number now on your phone and any late calls from private numbers don't answer, they tend to move on when they get nowhere.

Brings back memories, this use to happen a lot years ago.... Would have a great laugh turning it around and especially when they were stupid enough to call with a number.

Death threats etc were taken somewhat seriously though as parents got them too this was to home phone and they traced the calls, but sure the idiot didn't try to alter his voice anyway, was another kid in my class at school.

Call them back off a pay phone on the street.

How very retro! And very difficult given there are only 51 left in the country!

OP I'd try blocking your number and putting a 5 between 08X and their number to get straight to their voicemail. That might reveal their identity.

Have you had any run ins with anybody lately like with someone at work? Guards probably won't do anything unless there's threats made or something like that. I doubt you'll be able to trace the number. Maybe call your service provider and see if they any advice but that's probably a long shot.

Add the number to your list of contacts, then in Snapchat or Facebook go to find friends and click contacts.you may get a name from that if social media is linked to their number.
Also WhatsApp might have a profile pic on it either.

Depending on the situation, the Gardai will get in contact with the service provider.

Happened to me years ago when I got calls from someone who knew my name and my business. My number was on my website etc.

It turned out that it was a burner pay as you go so they couldn't charge anyone.

What I used to do OP was put the phone up to the tv when they called. Apart from the first time they rang when I asked who they were etc.

So basically I just used up there credit and time until they hung up. That seemed to work.

I wouldn't even give it a thought. Are you sure these aren't sales/scam calls? These companies often use an auto dialler and just dial up random numbers in the hope someone will pick up. I've had a lot of scam calls from London where I'm from and recently numbers from Burundi, Rwanda and Tunisia as well as the scam calls claiming to be from Amazon coming from Sri Lanka! Happens all the time...

Simply block the number and move on. Not worth getting so worked up about.
