    Well,

I have an 11 insignia, clutch pedal is getting spongey.

I think it needs to be replaced, kms are in the high 200's.

Is it worth doing or should I cut my losses?

Any ballpark figures for getting it done?

Aye, drive her on until the bearing grind becomes intolerable.

1,000 to 1,200 for a new clutch and flywheel.

I presume you mean drive her on without doing the clutch.

No grinding yet and it's grand going through the gears, just bites a bit quick and spongey peddle

    I do.

Drive her on until it stops working basically. The cost of replacement for the whole package will be the same now or then.

You mightnt have to scrap it anyway, sell it into the trade and some lad will do the clutch himself abd and make money on it. Its still an 8 grand motor.

8 grand, where did you pick that from. Might get two for that price.

As mentioned if car is all good apart from that which is cheaper op, new clutch or new car

Sorry it's 2011, if someone pays 8 grand for it I'll be very shocked/happy. 😂

Unfortunately I found that out the hard way

It's an 2011, probably a diesel with a decent tax band. Even with a clutch need doing it's not a 1.5K car.

Milage not the worst. You would get about 3k for it no issue for year and tax etc.

But I agree, Opel are a shocking car. I've never liked them, head gaskets made out of chocolate and they never got better either. From the 90's vectra right up to today I wouldn't trust one

The astra I thought was a terrible car too, looked a bit stylish but it ended there, interior was terrible, crap small mirrors etc and not comfortable to drive

I got burned on a 99 vectra. I'll never own another opel.

Anyway regardless of car brand, a clutch is a consumable. Fix the car and drive it on.

So you have no actual clutch problems other than spongey pedal.
Perhaps you just have air in the clutch hydraulics.

Yea, it's due a service so I'll get them to check it properly.
I told them about the pedal and they just said prob needs a clutch.

Other than that it's a decent enough car, high spec for the year, leather, heated seats and all that.
If I get the clutch problem fixed I'll prob flog it or else drive it to the end.

Just traded an 11 Insignia. Replaced clutch in 2018, 140,000km, cost 1100 euro. Just before I traded clutch pedal was getting spongey & sometimes not returning, slave cylinder was diagnosed, quoted around 400 euro to fix.

An 11 insignia with 250,000 on it will become a money pit very quickly. Better to sell it on with the clutch as it is before it starts costing you a fortune.

Probably a fair chance it's already been a money pit! :D

If you could find the tiny percentage of them which were automatic with a petrol engine they'd probably be no worse than any other car in their class but that all appear to be manual diesels. The petrols would benefit from the bad reputation of the diesels.

Clutch is in bad shape now.
Got it serviced and he's pricing up the clutch, I reckon just under a grand.

300,000km on it, high spec leather interior etc.

Have to decide if it's worth doing now or not.

Might do it try and sell and if I'm stuck with it, drive it into the ground

If its a grand for a clutch / flywheel then Id do it and keep driving it until it falls apart.

Get your mechanic to check the coolant bottle for leaks, and the turbo pipe on the lh side of the car. Replace the 2 of them while hes doing the clutch and keep it.

I slag them off all the time ( but that's because the ones I see have been abused and not serviced right) but Ive a few customers with 300+ on them and theyre still going strong - as long as they are serviced well they seem to keep going.

The cost of a clutch v replacement car, If its not giving you any other trouble, fix it and hold onto it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 648 ✭✭✭Conversations 3

Yea if he gives me a decent price I'll keep it might try sell it and if it doesn't sell I'll drive it on.

It's a comfortable car, and no other major issues.

I replaced that turbo pipe already, heard it was a common thing to go, also had the oil seal done, so hopefully it goes for another 100k

    Thanks

Well you've basically sorted the known issues already except for the coolant bottle so Id keep it and get it serviced every 10k and you should get another 100k out of it.

Could you pick up the parts in a scrap yard?

Had an 08 2l Elite spec petrol. (Automatic, 240bhp version)

    Turbo blew up.

    Traded it soon after.
