Looking for suggestions, was out today with my 455 .22, normally a tac driver, today however it was all over the shop, Couldn't hit anything, everything is tight, it's been cleaned, I did notice I had a bogey box of cci subs, every second or third round sounded like a mini mag, I routed out a box of eley subs and still the same accuracy issue, Am I missing another possible problem? It has a Sak mod that's been on it since new so shouldn't be that

    Couple of questions:

What distance were you shooting at
What's tack driver actually mean vs couldn't hit anything
Everything is tight, did you torque the action screws before going out? Some rifles can be finicky about torque settings. But not from tack driver to dinner plate difference!
    Were you over zealous cleaning?
    Barrel nice and tight?
Circa how many rounds down the barrel, carbon ring maybe?

Another lad mentioned CCIs going supersonic here on a thread, so that would explain the sound difference and wouldn't be an accuracy aid to say the least! The Eley's you switched to, what groups did they produce? And what did they do previously?
Whip off the moderator, it's another potential factor, eliminate it as a possible reason.

When did you last clean it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 980 ✭✭✭ chris20

Was ranging between 50 and 75 yards, Normally its well capable of 1inch groups at that, Barrel is tight, set up 2 a4 targets at exactly 50yards, easily a 6inch spread at that range,
It was cleaned but no more that usual and no new products used, only around 1k rounds total down it
When I swapped to the eleys the spread reduce to 3-4 inch groups at 50yards,
I took the mod off just to eliminate that and exactly the same problem

My old BRNO mod 2 absolutely loved Eley and Winchester subs, clover leading 60 yards consistently but those CCI were terrible.

Having said that, do one thing at a time. If you have removed the stock since last time then check all is tight and check accuracy.

If no change remove mod and check accuracy- should be no difference between it on or off if theres no problem.

    Check mounts, scope etc.

If theres a bipod - remove and check accuracy.

Remember you don't care about it being off zero, once its grouping as it did before.

The most important part is to do everything individually or you could be chasing your tail

Cleaned about 2 weeks ago with one outing last weekend without issue, only around 35 rounds through it since

Was anyone else in contact with the rifle, could the crown picked up a bad ding without you knowing? Have you another scope and mounts to try on it?

I am the only one with access to it and I was out by myself, always pit in padded case when heading out

Get someone else to shoot the gun, like the advice above you need to eliminate all external / internal errors including the shooter.

If the gun was shooting consistently for you then obviously something has gone wrong, sorryfor stating the obvious.
If the barrel is free floated check for this, if it isn't a free floated barrel then ensure its properly seated, not just tighten down but fitting sqaure and even.

Check the connections between the scope and the receiver. I once discover a single screw had backed out on a receiver mount and my accuracy was all over the place.

Lastly go back to my orginal point in this post and shoot a few more rounds down it, either yourself or a buddy and see if the group sizes shrink

+1 on all info given to date.

Plus - you said you had a Sak mod that's been on it since new.

Have you disabled and cleaned the mod ???

    Edit.
Forgot to add if your rifle is shooting erratically, before changing to another ammo, its best to run a patch or two down the barrel.
Example – SK ammo has a very thin oily lube, if you change to Eley which has a heavy waxy lube, it can take 20/30 rounds for some barrels to settle down. I have previously shot SK Std+ (yellow box) which is extremely oily, no clean and changed to Eley, took best part of a box for accuracy to come back in.

I'd take off the mod, I had an atec wave mod that was fine one day and then suddenly I had your problem.Unscrewed the mod and slid out baffle stack and looked through it,you could see where bullets were clipping it.They were barely touching it but it threw bullets everywhere.
Should also say sent it back to ballistech in Wexford and they replaced no questions asked, excellent service.

Yeah it's been cleaned a few times, It's the only mod I've had on it to date but I'll take it apart just to see

Just try shooting gun with no mod for 20 rounds see what happens.

    + 1 - definately try the above.

Also - chamber several rounds and eject to hand and check them for damage. If damage occured to your magazine, it may be scraping/marking the ammo.

The guys have all the problem areas cover. Give the barrel a through cleaning with brush and solvent, inspect the rifle paying attention to the barrel, crown, chamber and action screws check all scope screw torques, then test fire without the mod if its still all over the place change the scope out.

Check for a carbon ring near the chamber and damage to the crown and scope that's the areas I would be focusing on. I'm leaning towards the scope for the rifle going from good to all over the place. Test your turrets and see if they return to your zero after a good nipple twisting as Cyclops would say on youtube. lol I know now your all going to go check out cyclops lol

It's just when things go really wrong and you have checked all is tightened up then there's not much left to try. Other than your mod got a bang and it's off a little not much else left to try.
I'd say go back to basics. No mod, check nothing is loose again, and shoot your usual ammo at 50y.

We yer dead right.. I did say that and it can happen.. I done mine either by aggressive cleaning or aggressive shooting..
I'd eliminate a faulty scope first
