In 2008, RTE switched off the precious Medium Wave service and told listeners to buy DAB radios, many people bought the pure evoke 1 for €100 which doesn't have FM which will now be going to landfill this Easter.

How do you know many people bought that certain type of radio specifically?

Or do you mean you bought it?

The vast majority of Irish people still have radios that receive fm signals. I'd say sales of dab only radios in Ireland was very low.

RTÉ shut down the MW transmitter on 24th March 2008. It will shut down DAB on 31st March 2021. That's 4,756 days you got out of a DAB-only radio that you chose to buy, or 2c a day. I reckon you got your money's worth.

giving out that something volunteering purchased for €100 13 years ago is about to become obsolete ..... at a cost of €7.70 per YEAR

some people have too much time on their hands

Given DAB's extremely limited coverage area compared to MW I doubt many, if any, went and bought a DAB radio specifically to replace what they previously received on MW.

I thought the OP meant that RTE were burdening the vulnerable listener with all the misery porn... But that's taken as a given nowadays.

There have been a few similar posts with gripes against RTE for shutting down services. Reality is times change and broadcast mediums, for one reason or another, become less viable.

I also doubt RTE told anyone to buy a DAB radio.

I remember well how the MW closure affected me.

I pressed the LW and FM buttons on my radio and listened on.

They registered and then closed their account again. I bet it's the same person who does the same thing about LW252.

They should buy a cheap fm radio, you can get them for 7 or 8 euros.

If they're vulnerable they're listening to LW252. That's how it goes, right?
