Hi there, I'm on the look out for a small vehicle for farm work, so no nct required, strictly herding and moving stock from field to field. I've been looking for a jimny but hard to get, is there a similar alternative, my budget is 1500.
    Thanks

Vitara or grand Vitara around 2002-2006 or second gen rav 4 would be my choice at that budget.

Would that be 2nd generation? What year did they move to 3rd gen?

Thanks, I just saw that, might be a bit shook up, I'd prefer to spend a bit more for something that wasn't already put through farm work

    Mitsubishi Pajaro Junior?

Or this one with spare parts if you can hammer down the price closer to your budget:

Rust will be a big problem with these and the Jimny though especially at the lower end of the price range.

Would go with a jimny if possible over any of the others above. Cheap to tax and insure and perfect for your requirements. As bazz said, they are prone to rust issues and something to watch out for. Usual spots are in boot well, behind front headlights and cabin floor at driver/passenger seats. They do pop up on donedeal but don't last long so keep an eye out. Other than rust, they are very easy to maintain and service yourself so very low cost. I have an 02 the last few yrs and its a great little yoke.

If they don’t give a ****e about NCT, then tax and insurance is also irrelevant I think

Exactly, this won't see a road, just farm work

Anything will do then, the Toyota rav4 above is a good shout.

My cousin had one, let her down constantly. Far from reliable according to her.

That’s second gen but it’s front wheel drive.
4wd ones usually have arch extensions and if it’s a diesel they have a bonnet scoop too.

3rd gen came out in 06 and was only available in 5 door.

Personally I’d look for a Suzuki Grand Vitara like a GV1600 petrol.

That is second gen yeah. I think 06 saw the 3rd generation come in.

99% of petrol gen 2s here are 2wd I think.
The 3rd Gen was really the time it moved to a softer suv, more of a school run vehicle than something with any off road pretentions.

A fair few of them were alright. I think it was an extra €7k to go for the diesel vs the 1.8 at the time. €32945 vs €39995 if I remember correctly, and the diesel wasn’t much more economical. Better grip and better for towing obviously. The 1.8 was actually fun in a strange way.

Jesus that's a lot of money, didn't realise they were that expensive,v I've only ever had an interest in them in the last few years as bangernomics type stuff
If you didn't need the 4wd you'd certainly be mad to go for it.

Daihatsu Terios are also very good little off road vehicles and the 1.5 Toyota petrol engine is as reliable as you'll get. Theyre thirsty on fuel but that's probably only a minor concern to the OP. The AWD model is harder to find also (I sold an 06 version for my sister a few months back for €600, it needed body work but mechanically was 100% and never gave a moments bother in the 7 yrs my sister owned it)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The newer Terios is actually based on the 00-06 RAV4 platform.

It looks a lot narrower than the Eav4 or is it just me?

The first generation Terios was quite narrow, the second gen is a good 6” wider.

That was pretty cheap so bodywork must have been noticeable enough. A family member sold an 07 version a few months back that was also mechanically 100% and got €2k for it less than 24hrs after the advertisment going live.

They had the much narrower Terrios prior to that and between the two over nearly 20 years of driving they didn't give any trouble.
