Circle K - Outrageous prices

I was in Circle K, Thurles earlier. Feeling a bit peckish, I wandered over to the deli counter. On display was a burger and a couple of other items. I asked if the burger came with chips, the lady at the counter said no.

I said it was fine and went ahead and ordered the burger on its own. I went over to the counter to pay for it.

She said "It will be 6.25 euro" Me "What? 6.25 for a burger?"
Counter lady "Yes, that's correct". I scoffed and cancelled the order and got a mars bar instead.

I've never in my life paid 6.25 for a take away burger. Be aware when you go to Circle K.

You should have checked the price before ordering . Most forecourt shops tend to be more expensive for deli items .

Yes. It was 1.55 for a mars bar. I could have gotten 5 of them for 2 euro in Dunnes. But I was desperate so I paid it. While eating it, I imagined how good a burger would have to be for me to pay 6 euro. Kobe beef springs to mind!

My local Circle K charges 2.75 for the bottle of water I buy that the Maxol next door charges 1.60 for and the supervalu 100 metres away charges 1.30. I don't know how they have any customers.

You were well able to ask before you ordered, "does the burger come with chips" yet you didn't ask the cost.

I can afford a burger so I didn't bother to ask the price. When she said it was 6 euro I balked at it!

Similarly, I don't know the exact price of a litre of milk. But if I bought it to the counter and they tried to charge be 10 euro, I'd leave it back.

Anyway, the point of the thread is the extortionate prices in Circle K, not my general knowledge.

Would it not make sense to ask the price of things before you buy them if your the type who will leave stuff back if a burger is a couple of quid higher than what you expect to pay?

I'm not the type to leave stuff back. As explained the price was extortionate. I asked for a burger she told me the price I canceled the order. The burger wasn't made. Again there were no signs displaying the price, the only way to know how much it cost was by her telling me.

So last I was in Burger King I paid between 5 and 6 € for a burger w/o fries - 'twas a Whopper w/bacon&cheese or a Steakhouse one, can't recall .... and yet a slightly higher price prompts a reaction like this ??
I may of course be completely off here, but jeez it is not all that exorbitant ... just my 2 cents worth

I have found circle K to be one of the most expensive shops in the country by a long shot. Pretty much every other petrol station out does them in prices. I always avoid circle K as a result.

Forecourts and value don't go together but €6 is Bally Ma porn prices. Bottled water and coffee is probably the items people most get screwed over in shops.

€6 sounds mad but think about it. A Big Mac meal is what circa a tenner? Say two for the chips and two for the drink burger is €6. But yea, petrol stations and value are not congruent. €6 for a burger isn't as big a crime as €3.20 for a coffee.

In fairness, that’s a meaningless figure.

It would be mostly made up of fuel sales at a very low profit margin.

It also gives no indication of their expenses.

i can understand crazy prices at motorway service stations that are away from towns where you can pay for the convenience of not having to loose 30min driving into a town to get some food. but the shops in towns are just as bad . i cannot understand the business model. rip off all the customers or force them to buy very little.
the main customers for food are traveling workers like reps , truckers and trades. why arnt circle k aiming at that market. most centras in the country are doing a great trade on food.
i often see guys in the trades go to the petrol pump to fill up then go to another shop for food. they are letting potential customers walk out the door instead of selling them food. yes it would have to be cheaper and a lot better but they would sell a huge amount more

Centra is a good point. Decent prices, good food. On the other hand, I don't mind paying a bit extra for a bigger portion or better quality....but Circle K offers neither of those things.

There are two Deli's near my workplace, one I've been to about twice in two years, the other I'm there at least once a week. The one I go to is actually a little more expensive but the portions are good and they don't skimp on fillings in sandwiches.

The other place you would think every shred of cheese and leaf of lettuce came out of their pay packet. Last time I was in there the lad took out chicken piece by piece to ensure a thin, even covering over the slice of bread. Really unbelievable.

Circle k worst delis around by some distance and the coffee tastes like absolute arse (not in a good way).

That's a very low level of profit on turnover that high.
