Buying advice - first car in a long time

    Hi all,

I haven't had a car for 8 years as I didn't really need one, public transport and the occasional rental was all I needed. I also put myself as a named driver on my mums car to have at least some insurance record for when I needed to get my own insurance again.

Well, times change and the first baby is on the way in a few months so it's time to get a car again!

I've been completely disconnected from car buying so a bit of advice would be great so I can go shopping armed with a bit off knowledge.

So far, I think we've settled on a new Hyundai i30 which should be plenty of car for the first kid at least.

    Three key questions:

    1. Can you negotiate on a new car from a dealer or are they all selling for about the same RRP? If you can negotiate, what's good leverage? Buying end of month, buying on finance etc?

    2. Does anyone have experience of PCP with Hyundai? Were you surprised pleasantly or otherwise at the end of your 3 years? Should I go HP instead?

    3. Is there another make or model I should look at similar to an i30 but better value at the moment?

Thanks very much for your help!

As you only want a untilitarian car and you want new I’m suggesting something left field .
Apparently the new Dacia Sandero duo out is based on the CURRENT Renault Clio, unlike previous models which were based on old Renault tech. It has just won “what car” , car of the year , this year and should be substantially cheaper but drive aswell or better than the Hyundai. Dacia don’t do discounts in lieu of cheaper pricing so you know where you stand with rrp.
Let us know how you get on .

You need to go to Dacia.co.uk to see the new model, Dacia.ie are still pushing old stock .

I'm in a similar position, haven't had a car for many years.
Alternatives, I'm also looking at are the Kia Ceed, the new Peugeot 308 and the Skoda Scala.
I dont know the answer to your questions around negotiation when buying on pcp but i'm interested to hear from some other posters regarding this.. its something I was thinking about also.

I'm considering the Scala now too, 0% Apr on PCP looks interesting, more room for the baby seat and gear and reviews are good.

I would pick fuel first and then car, do you need petrol/diesl? would electric or hybrid work?

Probably petrol, it's not for a lot of driving, mostly urban with the odd longer trip.
