Home Office Space

    Hi,

I am looking to create an office space in an existing room in my house. Currently working out of the spare bedroom upstairs but looking at splitting the play room down stairs. Would people recommend a stud wall or has anyone done anything similar? Have been thinking of this way but afraid it will just look out of place once completed and may ruin the room.

    Thanks

The beauty of stud walls is that they're easy to put up and take down again if you don't need them.

An office shouldn't ruin the room or look out of place once it's well located. That is, don't just stick up a couple of walls in the corner of the room or split the window in half.

The big two things to consider are light and noise. You don't want to sit in a room with artificial lighting all day. So if you can't annex a small window for the office space, you will need to put rooflights in the top of the stud wall or knock a new window in the side of the house.

In terms of noise; if it's off a play room are the kids going to be in there all day screaming and shouting? Is the TV going to be on half the day?

The other alternative is something we had growing up - built-in units in one corner. So a built-in corner desk with cabinets above and below it. Gave plenty of room for my Dad to work and space to store stuff. It meant nobody was allowed in there while he was working, but when he wasn't it meant we had the whole room available to use.

Yes the room we are thinking of doing it in is a play room but the kids are gone during the working day so only using it in evening time / weekends. I was wondering would a fitted desk with shelves and doors in the alcove part of the room be the best thing space wise.

    Why door it?
Could you separate the space with soft furnishings?
IKEA high level free standing shelving or similar?

We've put a desk, printer etc. at one end of the playroom. So the last metre or so is the office and the rest is the playroom/den.

Same story with us, added some office furniture in corner of play room with unit for printer etc. Not massive but does the trick and much quieter than the kitchen table ! Bliss.
