Gardai refuse to disclose reason for visit?

Is there anything suspicious about this? Basically in 2019. I got a visit by Gardai detectives. A black car parked outside my house and two men dressed in business attire got out. I was in my balcony and saw them. One of them waved.

When i came to open the door, they showed me a badge, asked me if I was "X", and then said they were checking up on me. They took my phone number and then left.

Someone said that I should go down to the station to see if they were actually genuine detectives and if so, what was their reason for their visit. I did and they said they were probably doing an investigation and that they would contact me and tell me why.

Well that was a few months ago and so far, nothing. My friend told me it might be because I was cautioned in the past as detectives visiting someone for a welfare check is suspicious (was in a hospital earlier in 2019). If that's the case then they would withold their reason for visiting me.

Gardaí can make enquires as they see fit, they are under no obligation to explain their interest or if a particular matter is being investigated.

If this occurred in 2019, why be concerned about it now?

Detectives wouldnt be visiting you for welfare fraud.....welfare inspectors would....

And as the OP noted, detectives wouldn't be sent to check on the welfare of a citizen following a report from a concerned member of the public. Regular uniform branch (whatever it's called here) would be used for that.

A welfare check is to see that a person is OK - that they haven't fallen down the stairs or something.

If you are thinking social welfare, there are gardaí that are also Department of Social Protection inspectors.

So, the question is, is it even normal to get a visit by Gardai detectives? As I said I was in Beaumont for a month from April to May and once left without permission but that had been resolved.

Someone did say that getting detectives to visit you is serious as they are generally called to visit someone who poses a risk. I'm not sure what risk I pose.

    No, it's not.

If the guards were worried about your health, they wouldn't be sending detectives. It's likely you're a (potential) suspect for something. They aren't required to tell you what.

Hopefully someone here can tell you your rights in terms of being required to let them in to your home or to speak to them - as a general rule, insisting on having a solicitor to represent you is a good idea.

Its over a year since they called. They obviously got the wrong address and have moved on because if you were doing something illegal they would have been back.

Did you see what county the car was registered in, did it have just a tax disc showing? What make/model car was it?

Perhaps a suspect gave their name and address matching yours and the detectives were checking to see if you matched the person who gave your name and address.

I had a similar visit many years ago.

Quick visit. Are you x and this your address. Can I see some ID to verify you are x. Thank you have a nice evening.

Never got an answer as to what they wanted.

OP, just out of curiosity why are you bringing this up now if it was over 2 years ago, if you heard nothing back from the Guards then why are you worrying about a non issue?

OP's gone. This scenario appeared before from Re-regs. Probably never happened but if it did it may have been connected to his comments in the Favourite Drugs thread.

OP may be gone, but can't you request your pulse records from AGS?

This never happened. The OP is a re-reg fantasist.

    Only if it really happened.

    Edit: As already said.

Make a subject access request to AGS - the interaction *should* be recorded on PULSE (the Garda System) and be detailed within. If you are in an ongoing investigation however it may not be disclosed to you in the SAR for obvious reasons.
