    Hi all

I’m considering building a covered outdoor pergola. But I want something substantial with no blocked views. I’ve seen the type of thing I’m looking for online (see photos).

    Could someone advise
    - what type of steel is needed
    - cost and where to buy

    Many thanks.

Wood is better than steel easier to build

Timber posts are mickey mouse, 100mm box uprights in that photo, or get tubing either. 3mm is thick enough. Roughly e100 for a 25' length

Thanks so much for that. It also seems like there’s another steel shape that’s used as a crossbeam. Would that be the same type of price?

Would you know approx why kinda of distance between uprights I can get out of these thickness of steel?

Thanks. I agree with you. Messing around with wood. Want something substantial.

    Thanks for advice

Universal beam 152 X 89 or something like that. Google it for photos.

If you just go to a steel supplier with the dimensions of the garden area they'll advise you. If it was a house or something you'd need a structural engineer to work out the size but whoever you buy it from will have enough of an idea to advise.

We can't advice structural issues on boards but I presume that relates to occupied buildings and not a garden feature like this which wouldn't really have any building regulations.

Would you consider getting it gavlanised?

    Thanks for that. That’s great.

And this is my next question. Can it simply be painted? Would the roof I’m putting on protect it sufficiently? I’ve been thinking of boxing it in with brick but are there other ways to box suitable for external.

    Thanks again

I am thinking of doing the sam and priced 10 foot length of 100 mm box is 50 euro a piece
and I would bury 2 foot of it in concrete and was thinking of just boxing over the steel with treated 4 / 1 timber.

I had wondered about timber. But could you also use cement board or something similar and plaster over it.

What would you use to connect pieces together.

I’m getting a little ahead of myself but the below pic looks amazing as well. Need skylights though.

Expensive tastes. Paupers budget. DIYers delusion.
